Taipei, Nov. 23 (CNA) Seven suspects have been arrested in Taichung and Hualien in connection with the murders in the past three years of a man and a girl whose bodies were stuffed into concrete-filled plastic drums, police in Taichung reported Monday.

The cases came to light mainly because a friend of one of the members of the crime gang involved in the case tipped off the police, leading to the discovery of the drums and the arrests of seven suspects last week.

The main suspect surnamed Hsu (徐) was arrested in Hualien while the others were arrested in Taichung, but the police did not provide any further details on when the tip-off or the arrests occurred.

Six of the arrested suspects were handed over to the Taichung District Prosecutors Office, whose request to detain them was approved by the district court, according to Taichung police.

The Taipei Public Library system purchased a Chinese-made book that glorifies that country’s COVID-19 response measures, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taipei City Councilor Chen E-jun (陳怡君) told reporters yesterday.

The publisher, Changjiang Children’s Publishing Group, is a partner of the Chinese Communist Party’s Publicity Department — commonly known as the Chinese Propaganda Department, Chen said, adding that she would ask the library to remove the book from its catalogue.

Taipei Public Library Deputy Director Wang Shu-man (王淑滿) said that an order for nine copies had been placed, but they had not yet arrived, so she would temporarily cancel the order, and have a digital version of the book removed from the library’s online system.

Wang said she would call a meeting of the library’s collections committee to inspect the book before deciding whether it should be added to the library’s collection.    [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Parents who stop their car on a yellow line will no longer have to drop their children off to school within three minutes, according to new traffic rules coming into force on Dec. 1.

However, the relaxation of the rule does not apply to waiting for the children to leave school, CNA reported Friday (Nov. 20). There is also a maximum age limit of seven years for the children involved.

The necessary changes were announced in June, but the Ministry of Transportation announced Friday that they would start to be implemented on Dec. 1. The new measure amounted to an expansion of the rule from only covering children with impaired movements to all children up to the age of seven, officials said.

Stopping on a red line to drop children off would still be banned, though if the practice did not pose a danger or a hindrance to other traffic, leniency might apply, according to the CNA report.
