cuisine, will be available in Taiwan in the first quarter of 2018, said Michelin Spokesman Bruno de Feraudy on Monday, offering a glimpse of the highly-secretive inspection process.

Taipei will become the 30th city, region or country the guide covers, which will be published in both Chinese and English, de Feraudy said at a pre-announcement news conference in the capital city.

“The Michelin Guide Taipei will introduce the gourmet food of Taiwan to gourmets all over the world and it gives one more good reason for people to visit Taiwan,” he said. “Moreover, it is also a valuable opportunity for good chefs in Taiwan to prove their professional capability to the rest of the world.”

The evaluation is currently underway, de Feraudy said, but declined to reveal how many inspectors and visits will be paid to each restaurant.    [FULL  STORY]

Agencies criticized for blocking cell stations

Government agencies have failed to comply with regulations by refusing to allow the installation of cellphone base stations on their properties, leading to slow mobile Internet nationwide, members of the legislature’s Transportation Committee said yesterday.

The main reason mobile Internet connection speeds remain slow is because government officials refuse to allow base stations to be installed on their properties, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Chen Ou-po (陳歐珀) said.

Telecoms between 2014 and August filed 6,515 applications to build base stations on government-owned property, but only 503 applications have been approved, he said.

“I just cannot agree with the National Communications Commission’s report that government agencies have been helpful in facilitating the construction of base stations on government property,” he said.    [FULL  STORY]

China trying to poach allies: source

While relations with the nation’s diplomatic allies remain stable, China has been increasingly active in its attempts to poach Caribbean and Central American allies, including Haiti and the Dominican Republic, a government source said on Saturday.

“If China takes a heavy-handed approach, there is little we can do,” the source said.

Even when former president Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) was in office, Beijing was incessantly active, despite the so-called “diplomatic armistice,” the source said, citing political maneuvering by the former China Commercial Office in Panama.

Head representative of China’s Office of Commercial Development in the Dominican Republic, Fu Xinrong (傅新蓉), was previously deputy director of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, which on Friday announced plans to invest US$820 million to build an incinerator, natural gas plant and hydro power plant in the Dominican Republic.

The fraudsters also carried over the impersonations to the instant messaging app Line, where the victims would often finalize the details of the transaction with the seller.
