The national railway network’s development should not be the job of local officials, Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said yesterday during an inspection trip to Yilan County with members of the Legislative Yuan’s Transportation Committee.

Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) officials had failed to fulfill their duty in the past, approaching railway projects with the wrong mentality, he said.

Lin and the lawmakers were briefed by ministry officials on projects in the county, including elevating Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) tracks, extending the high-speed rail line to the county, connecting the Chiang Wei-shui Freeway (National Freeway No. 5) and the improved Suhua Highway and building a new Nanfangao Bridge (南方澳橋) in Suao Township (蘇澳).

Asked by reporters if the projects were pork-barrel items to court Yilan voters ahead of the Jan. 11 elections., Lin said the MOTC has not just launched transportation projects in Yilan, and he began reviewing the planned around-the-nation public transport network after taking office at the beginning of the year.    [FULL  STORY8]

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Canadian man was arrested late last month while trying to smuggle in excess of NT$100 million (US$3.2 million) worth of marijuana through Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE).

Since Canada legalized marijuana in 2018, customs officers at TPE have seized marijuana smuggled by drug trafficking groups from Canada on several occasions. As a result, drug enforcement units have begun to strengthen their investigation of this new drug transportation pipeline.

According to the Aviation Police Bureau, customs officers at 5 a.m. on Oct. 30 scanned two suitcases from Toronto, Canada, through an X-ray machine at Terminal 2 and tagged them as suspicious, reported Liberty Times. When their Canadian owner picked up his bags and walked towards customs, he was stopped by officers, who asked him to open the suitcases.

In addition to a few items of clothing, officers discovered 30 vacuum-sealed packs, each containing 1.054 kilograms (kg) of marijuana buds for a total of 31,629 kg, reported China Times. The market price for marijuana in Taiwan is approximately NT$1,500 to NT$2,000 per gram, while marijuana buds are worth three to five times that price.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Nov. 12 (CNA) The Retired Police Officers Association launched a protest Tuesday over a court ruling that requires the state to pay compensation to 10 people who were injured during the 2014 Sunflower Movement protests.

The Taipei District Court ruled in October that the city's Police Department must pay NT$1.11 million (US$36,174) in total damages to 10 protesters, who suffered serious injuries when police forcibly removed them from the Executive Yuan complex during the 2014 demonstrations.

In a statement released Monday, the association said the ruling was politically motivated and unacceptable.

Those who broke the law have been raised above those authorized to enforce it, the association said.    [FULL  STORY]

MOTC head inspects new air traffic control tower

SMART FACILITY: The design of the new tower, which is 19m taller than the current one, was inspired by Queen’s Head rock in Yehliu and it includes 15 advanced systems

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport’s new control tower is to officially begin operations on Dec. 16, Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said after inspecting the tower’s facilities yesterday afternoon.

The present tower has been in use for 40 years, while the number of aircraft landing at and departing from the airport has risen from less than 100 per day to more than 700, Lin said.

As the airport’s air traffic controllers now direct more than 250,000 aircraft movements per year, its tower has to have smarter facilities, he said.

“The design of the new control tower was inspired by the Queen’s Head in Yehliu Geopark. It has integrated aviation control, automatic dependent surveillance, aviation weather and 12 other advanced systems, enabling air traffic controllers to safely and efficiently guide flight operations with the assistance of intelligent facilities,” Lin said.    [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — After a wildfire struck Taichung City on Sunday, local residents on Monday (Nov. 11) discovered the carcass of a deer, suspecting it had fallen victim to the blaze.

At 2:20 p.m. on Sunday, the Taichung City Fire Bureau received a report about a brush fire near an electric tower in the city's Longjing District. The fire was visible to motorists driving past the 185-kilometer mark on National Freeway No. 3.

The fire department dispatched over 100 firefighters to the scene. Due to strong winds, the blaze continued to spread and burn throughout the day, and it was not until 2:51 a.m. on Monday morning that firefighters were able to fully extinguish the fire, reported UDN.

Later that day, a netizen posted photos of a deer carcass they had discovered at the scene of the fire in a ditch on Nanliao Footpath. In the photos, the deer's legs are bloody, and the report said this was possibly caused by severe burns or taking a precipitous fall.    [FULL  STORY]
