If US policy toward China changes under an administration of US president-elect Joe Biden, Taiwan might come under greater pressure from Beijing, said Kuo Yu-jen (郭育仁), a professor at National Sun Yat-sen University, told the Central News Agency (CNA) yesterday.

China is perceived as a threat by US Democrats and Republicans alike, and there is a consensus between Washington’s executive and legislative branches, Kuo said, but he added that he still is concerned about Biden’s possible approach.

A lighter approach or a slower pace in implementing policies toward China would give Beijing a greater leeway, he said.

If Biden hesitates, Taiwan might come under greater pressure, Kuo said.    [FULL  STORY]

The increased societal interaction comes even as China has been aggressive with both India and Taiwan this year

Taiwan is set to host mega Diwali celebration that is being sponsored by the Taiwanese government and will see the participation of representation by government. The Diwali celebration will take place in the Taiwanese capital Taipei and is being organised by Taipei India Music and culture centre and Indians in Taiwan group. Deputy Taiwan Foreign Minister Tien Chung Kwang will be present at the celebrations.

Recently engagement between India and Taiwan have increased in terms of societal interaction. On Taiwan National Day, strong support was seen in India angering Chinese Embassy. Taiwanese president Tsai ing-wen had tweeted about Indian dishes and said her favourite food being Chana Masala and Naan. She also recalled her India visit, what she termed as "memories of a vibrant, diverse & colorful country."

The increased societal interaction comes even as China has been aggressive with both India and Taiwan this year. With India, the line of actual control row has been the worst Chinese build-up while with Taiwan, Chinese jets have been breaching the Taiwan strait median line that separates Taiwan from China.    [FULL  STORY]

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) has undermined Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) peace efforts with China, the former president said yesterday, adding that Tsai could meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平), provided she agreed to the so-called “1992 consensus.”

Ma made the remarks at a forum hosted by the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation in Taipei, marking the fifth anniversary of his meeting with Xi in Singapore on Nov. 7, 2015, the first time that leaders from both sides of the Taiwan Strait had met since 1949.

“It was for building a ‘bridge for peace’ for dialogue between the two sides of the Strait,” Ma said of the meeting.

“The summit was not an accident, but was the result of our accumulated efforts over seven years to establish a common political foundation and build mutual trust,” he said. “Mr Xi and I exerted great effort to remove many obstacles to meet at the time, and we did so to advance the cause of peace across the Strait, and this would not be forgotten by history.”    [FULL  STORY]

US Speeds Arms Sales for Taiwan as Island Revamps China Strategy

TAIPEI, TAIWAN – U.S. officials are speeding arms sales to Taiwan this year as the Asian island revamps its defense strategy against old, and more powerful, foe China, and experts on both sides say Washington is extra keen to show support.

Taiwan is shifting toward asymmetric warfare — the use of unconventional tactics against a stronger enemy — and analysts believe the U.S. government figures the right defensive weaponry should follow. U.S. officials for their part want to show China they will consistently oppose perceived threats of force against Taiwan, the experts say.

“Probably Washington’s consensus is that the Chinese intimidation is growing, the cross-Strait balance is tilting, heavily, and Taiwan’s arms procurement strategy or items have been in the past too much focused on force-on-force capability rather than asymmetrical capability,” said Alexander Huang, a strategic studies professor at Tamkang University in Taiwan.

Tainan, Nov. 6 (CNA) Taiwan's China Petrochemical Development Corp. (CPDC) on Friday was ordered to pay NT$14.375 million (US$503,187) in compensation to Tainan residents for dioxin contamination caused by its plant in the city's Annan District.

In 2017, 229 residents living near CPDC's Anshun plant on Tainan's northwest coast filed a compensation claim against the company and the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

They alleged that CPDC and its state-run predecessor had polluted the local waters with mercury, causing dangerous levels of dioxins in the fish and shrimp that served as one of their main food sources.

On Friday, Tainan District Court ruled that 190 of the claimants had already exceeded the maximum allowable time for making a compensation claim, but ordered CPDC to pay NT$14.375 million to the remaining 39 claimants, amounting to NT$368,590 per person.    [FULL  STORY]

Kaohsiung expects Pride parade to boost tourism

THREEFOLD INCREASE: The event, to be held on Nov. 28, would draw up to 45,000 participants, the organizers said, attributing the trend to rising acceptance of LGBT people

Kaohsiung is making a strong bid this year to include the city’s annual Pride parade into its tourism promotion and marketing efforts, hoping that the “pink dollar” would help to boost its economy.

The promotion of the 2020 Kaohsiung Pride, themed “We! Around You!” which is to be held on Nov. 28, is a joint effort by the city government and civic group KH Pride.

It is the first time for KH Pride to work so closely with the city government to organize the parade, group chairman Guzifer Leong (梁展輝) yesterday said

The city has been advertising the event on public TV channels and official Web sites to help attract more people, Leong said.

To promote the event, a sidewalk at Pier-2 Art Center has been painted in rainbow colors and LGBT-themed artworks have been put on display at the scenic waterfront, Kaohsiung Deputy Mayor Shih Che (史哲) said.    [FULL  STORY]
