Taipei, Nov. 15 (CNA) A student team from Taichung-based Chaoyang University of 201511150021t0001Technology (CYUT 朝陽科技大學) won the best film award at a university short film festival award ceremony held Sunday by the Ministry of Education in Taipei.

The ministry presented nine awards, including gold, silver, bronze, special and excellence awards during the ceremony to short films selected from a total of 24 submissions.

The contest, part of the ministry’s “Talent Education Stories” project, was aimed at encouraging college students to create films on stories in four themes: lauding dedicated teachers, combining studies and career skills, promoting students’ international competitiveness, and boosting their future productivity.

The Chaoyan team took the gold award with a short film titled “Thursday’s Music Class,” which depicts Shih Meng-chi (施孟琪), a teacher at the university’s child care department, spending extra time after school teaching students interested in music and the arts. As a result, two of her students who graduated from the school have set up a child music workshop to allow their younger schoolmates to learn through internships.     [FULL  STORY]

has been tapped as Chairman Eric Chu’s (朱立倫) running mate, a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) member said the KMT’s vice presidential candidate will most likely be someone from the media industry.

During an episode of SET-TV’s political talk show Ching Pao Hsin Wen Hsien (驚爆新聞線) that aired on Saturday night, former DPP spokesperson Hsu Chia-ching (徐佳青) said Chu has set his eyes on female media professionals as potential running mates.

“Now is a particularly difficult time for Chu to find someone to be on his ticket for the Jan. 16 elections because everyone knows the odds are strongly against him winning the race. That is why KMT members are attempting to secure a safe position, such as a spot on the party’s legislators-at-large list,” Hsu said.

Since Huang, who served two terms as Chiayi mayor and three terms as a KMT legislator, would want to ensure a continuance in elective offices to pave the way for a comeback in Chiayi, being a legislator-at-large seems a better way to achieve her goal than joining Chu’s doomed presidential campaign, Hsu said.     [FULL  STORY]

condolence book Saturday, through which people can express messages of sympathy for the dead in a series of terrorist attacks in Paris a day earlier that have caused at least 127 deaths.

The French Office in Taipei took advantage of Facebook to set up a page as an online condolence book to mourn the victims.

It said the page was opened as a platform for people who want to send messages to pay their respects to the dead and express sympathy to the people of France.

French President Francois Hollande said Saturday that the attacks in Paris that killed 127 people were “an act of war” organized from abroad by Islamic State with internal help, according to foreign media.

Hollande also said that he would address parliament on Nov. 16 in an extraordinary meeting and that the country would observe three days of official mourning for the victims of the attacks, according to the reports.

Taiwan’s representative office in France said the same day that there have been no reports of Taiwanese casualties in the attacks, after confirming with the French authorities.     [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman and presidential candidate Eric Chu met with high-level US officials yesterday in Washington, D.C., where discussions touched on trade, cross-strait ties and East Asian security.

Chu and Taiwan’s top envoy to the US, Shen Lyushun, were absent from a welcome dinner hosted by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) at the Twin Oaks Estate later in the evening, raising speculation that the two were called away for additional high-level meetings, which the KMT later denied.

Chu, on the fourth day of his one-week visit, started his Washington visit at the US State Department, where he met with Daniel Russel and Susan Thornton, US Assistant Secretary of State and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian Affairs, respectively. From there, his delegation met with National Security Council officials at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building located adjacent to the White House West Wing, including the agency’s Asia director Daniel Kritenbrink and Ryan Hass, director for China, Taiwan and Mongolian Affairs.

At noon, Chu met US Defence Department officials at the Pentagon, including Kelly Magsamen, principal deputy assistant secretary of defence for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, along with two other high-level officials.

Tsai lashes out at Ma and Chu for ‘skewed’ priorities

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) yesterday criticized President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) presidential candidate Eric Chu (朱立倫) over their criticisms of her.

Ma during a news conference on Friday about his recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) accused the DPP legislative caucus of dodging its responsibility to keep the executive branch checked since it objected the KMT motion to invite Ma to brief the legislature about his meeting with Xi.

“The key point is that the Ma-Xi meeting was completely opaque before it happened. The people did not know what they would be talking about and how they would talk about it. Even the legislative speaker said he did not know the details,” Tsai said when responding to media queries at a campaign event in Keelung. “For such reasons, the people now distrust the KMT government, and the fundamental cause of this is that there is not an established procedure for it.”     [FULL  STORY]

November 7 summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping against allegations he had failed to stand up for Taiwan’s interests.

His unexpected news conference came as it grew increasingly unlikely that the Legislative Yuan would invite him to present a report about the topic. The Democratic Progressive Party has opposed the idea, while it accused Ma of having used too much secrecy in preparing the summit and of doing a poor job of defending Taiwan.

The president told the Friday news conference that during his talks with Xi, he had both mentioned Taiwan’s official name, the Republic of China, and the complete phrasing of the “1992 Consensus” formula, “One China, Each His Own Interpretation.” Chinese officials usually never mention the second part of the phrase, underlining statements by the DPP and former President Lee Teng-hui that the consensus does not exist.     [FULL  STORY]

National Chengchi University’s Election Study Center was commissioned to conduct the survey of people aged 20 or over across the country from Nov. 8 to 11 on President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping (習近平) on Nov. 7.

The poll found that 61.6 percent of respondents supported the principles of equality and transparency shown in the Ma-Xi meeting in Singapore and 26.1 percent did not.     [FULL  STORY]

reaffirm what he said was the importance of the so-called “1992 consensus” in maintaining cross-strait peace, after the opposition parties denied him the chance to report to the legislature on his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平).

The president reiterated at the press conference that the meeting was a success because it built a bridge between the two sides and provides a model for future interaction.

“The meeting has also received wide coverage in the foreign media; as of today there were nearly 1,000 pieces of foreign reporting on the meeting,” Ma said.

The world in general has voiced its praise over the meeting, Ma said.

“Indonesia, for example, even offered to host the next cross-strait leaders’ meeting,” he said.     [FULL  STORY]
