round of Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations, according to ruling Kuomintang Chairman Eric Chu Nov. 11.

“The U.S. has been a staunch ally of Taiwan over the years, supporting the country’s international participation in a wide array of areas,” Chu said, citing the U.S. Congress’ endorsement of Taiwan’s bids to join the International Civil Aviation Organization and International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).

“At present, Taiwan is bolstering its drive to join the TPP trade liberalization pact,” he added. “We look forward to making significant headway in this regard by strengthening our partnership with the U.S.”

Chu, who is in the U.S. promoting his policy platform as the KMT candidate in the 2016 ROC presidential election, made the remarks while meeting with House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce in Los Angeles.     [FULL  STORY]

expected to attend several closed-door meetings in Washington with US government officials.

While for diplomatic and protocol reasons, there was no official confirmation of his schedule, administration sources said that Chu would be “warmly welcomed” and treated much the same as Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) during her visit earlier this year.

Chu’s week-long visit to the US — highlighted by three days in Washington, is aimed at winning US support for his candidacy in the Jan. 16 presidential elections and in assuring Washington that if elected he would maintain peaceful cross-strait relations.

At a Wednesday night dinner given by Taiwanese-American supporters, Chu said that the so-called “1992 consensus” and its differing interpretations constituted the only way forward in relations with Beijing.     [FULL  STORY]

but a court immediately slapped him with restrictions of movement due to another case, reports said Wednesday.

The founder of the Eastern Multimedia Group entered prison in November 2013 after being sentenced to three years and ten months for his participation in his family’s China Rebar scandals, but good behavior allowed his parole to be approved last Friday, with his effective release set for noon Wednesday.

However, just hours after leaving the Taipei Prison, he appeared at the Taipei District Court for a hearing about a case which broke last year, and in which he was accused of having bribed prison officials to give him more lenient treatment.     [FULL  STORY]

Organized by the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration of the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the seven-month event features bamboo-weaving pieces by artists Kaling and Elen Luluwan from the Amis and Rukai indigenous ethnic groups, respectively.

ECNSAA Director Trust Lin said Nov. 9 that the event will build on the momentum of the first Taiwan Land Art Festival, which wrapped up Oct. 11 and proved popular with visitors and locals alike.

“We hope to sustain people’s interest in the combination of spectacular natural scenes and captivating works of art, as well as further promote these old bridges, which are listed as historic monuments by the Bureau of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture.”     [FULL  STORY]

would attach a high priority to public health and the stances of Taiwan’s neighboring trade partners on the issue of US pork imports.

Chu made the remarks at a news conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon, the first leg of his seven-day visit to the US.

“While the Taiwanese government has no preference as to which regional partnership to join first: the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) or the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, I personally think Taiwan’s entry to the TPP will happen sooner,” Chu said.

As the bilateral Trade and Investment Framework Agreement between Taipei and Washington is likely to play a major role in Taiwan’s attempts to join the TPP, the issue of US pork imports would most likely be put on the negotiating table in the process, Chu said.     [FULL  STORY]

Ma sparks more fumes than glory during summit

The summit between President Ma Ying-jeou and his Chinese compatriot President Xi Jinping

has been widely seen as a publicity stunt set up just in time prior to the upcoming January 16 elections. Some say the motive behind this meeting was a ploy to boost Kuomintang’s low-slung popularity, while majority of the pundits believe Ma wanted to write “history” by promoting his own legacy after he is long gone from the face of the Earth.

Whatever Ma has concocted, he can be rest assured that the meeting in Singapore will not help instill support for the KMT, nor will it propel him to a symbolic status with the likes of then-Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, who received the Nobel Peace Prize together with Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres for the negotiations at Oslo in 1993.

Why? It’s because the average “public” outside of Taiwan don’t really give a toss about the Ma-Xi meeting, let alone who Ma is (or his full name). Cynical, but true.

In terms of global affair, Taiwan is so insignificant and “unnewsworthy” that whenever there are international news broadcasts about the island, the topic would most probably be related to natural disasters, or a “showdown” in parliament (and on rare occasions such as the Ma-Xi summit.)     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Nov. 10 (CNA) Amid recent reports of a bullet-planting scandal at an international 201511100033t0001airport in the Philippines, Taiwanese travelers to the Southeast Asian country have been urged to remain calm if they fall victim to similar scams.

Roget Hsu (許高慶), a travel industry veteran and former secretary-general of Taiwan’s Travel Agent Association, said that he heard of similar cases about 20 years ago and advised travelers to remain calm in the event that they fall victim to such scams.

It would be safer to pay the money demanded by con artists to avoid getting stuck, Hsu said, adding that people should also collect any evidence they can at the same time and make a report to the Philippine authorities afterwards.

He also urged travelers never to agree to carry items or luggage for strangers at airports.

Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III has ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged bullet-planting scam at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.     [FULL  STORY]

honor in Taiwan’s crafts sector, by the Ministry of Culture Nov. 9.

“Chang is being recognized for his commitment to preserving and researching traditional glazes, as well as developing innovative glazing techniques,” an MOC official said. “He also works tirelessly to pass the artistic torch to the younger generation.”

The 83-year-old soldier-turned-ceramist was born in Hunan province, mainland China. He began his apprenticeship at the age of 45 under the late Lin Pao-chia, known as the father of Taiwan ceramics, after working at two U.S. appliance companies and as the manager of a ceramics factory until its closure.

According to the MOC, Chang learned the true essence of ceramics from Lin and is revered for his unique and fascinating Drunken Scarlet—a camouflage glaze giving ceramic works a cracked look—as well as Jun wares, a type of Chinese celadon first created during the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127).     [FULL  STORY]
