yesterday, with sharpshooter Chen Ying-chun collecting 26 points as the team won 80-76 at the Taipei Arena.

Lee Kai-yang chalked up 14 points, while Huang Tsung-han and Fan Shih-en contributed 10 points each to help Taiwan win in front of a full crowd, which was boisterous in support throughout the game.

In other men’s basketball action, Estonia edged the Czech Republic 80-78, Canada defeated Japan 84-71, Argentina routed the United Arab Emirates 121-50, Lithuania beat Ukraine 76-71, Germany beat Finland 71-64, the US hammered Romania 120-62, Israel triumphed 93-49 over Mozambique and Latvia beat Hungary 78-65.

Lin Geng-neng, Chinese Taipei weightlifter Hung Wan-ting shook off a setback in the snatch to surpass Kazakhstan’s Karina Goricheva and win the women’s 69-kg gold. The medal — secured with a 227-kg lift, 101 kg in the snatch and 126 kg in the clean and jerk — was the second weightlifting gold for the host team at this Universiade.

Hung had planned to retire from weightlifting last year but decided to compete at the Taipei Universiade after encouragement from Lin. Both of the 27-year-old athletes teared up after the victory. “I’m so happy and thrilled. This made everything worth it,” she said. “This is my first gold medal in an international competition. Taiwan’s Sung Ching-yang (宋青陽), Kao Mao-chieh (高茂傑) and Chen Yan-Cheng (陳彥成) edged South Korean and Colombian teams in the final of the men’s 3000 m relay to win the 11th Taipei Universiade gold medal for the host country, with a time of 4 minutes, 4.432 seconds.

Korea notched silver in 4:04.447 and Colombia took bronze in 4:04.512 in a race that was tightly contested throughout.

The Taiwanese trio has helped all Taiwanese athletes competing in Taipei Universiade to meet the goal set by Taiwan’s Sports Administration of finishing the Universiade with 11 gold medals, regardless of their type.    [FULL  STORY]

UNIVERSIADE: Taiwan wins silver medal in taekwondo (Update)

Taipei, Aug. 23 (CNA) Taiwanese taekwondo athlete Chuang Chia-chia (莊佳佳) was defeated by South Korean Kim Jandi in the Women’s -67kg final at the Summer Universiade in Taipei on Wednesday.

Chuang lost 7-14 in the final, winning the silver medal.

In the men’s -80kg taekowndo event, which also concluded on Wednesday, Taiwanese Liu Wei-ting (劉威廷) won the bronze medal after losing in the semi-final against Azerbaijian’s Milad Beigi Harchegani 4-12.

Liu defeated fighters from the United Arab Emirates, Iran and France earlier in the day, thereby landing himself in third place along with Norwegian Richard Andre K Ordemann.    [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Three Taiwanese athletes won medals at Taipei Universiade on Sunday, Lin Kan-yu won a silver and Chen Chien-chuan won bronze in the Taekwondo poomsae individual competition, while the weightlifter Kao Chan-hung also got a bronze medal for the local delegation.

Lin Kan-yu (林侃) won Taiwan’s first silver in the women’s Taekwondo poomsae. She told the press that she took the time to do her make up. She learned to handle it herself while competing outside Taiwan. According to her, this makes a positive impression on the judges.

Chen Chien-Chuan (陳建銓) got the second medal for Taiwan, after winning bronze in the men’s Taekwondo poomsae. Chen said that as the competition date was getting closer, he was using a photo of Universiade medals as wallpaper on his smartphone. “Every time I looked at my phone, I was reminding myself to do my best to win a medal. Taipei, Aug. 21 (CNA) Taiwan’s Taekwondo athletes brought home a gold medal

and two silver medals in various poomsae events at the 2017 Taipei Universiade on Monday.

The gold medal was won by Li Cheng-gang (李晟綱) and Su Chia-en (蘇佳恩) in the mixed pair category, with a final score of 7.853.

In the men’s team category, Chang Wei-chieh (張惟傑), Hsieh Ming-yang (謝明揚) and Huang Chia-jung (黃佳蓉) garnered a silver medal with a final score of 7.587.

The other silver medal was won by Chen Hsiang-ting (陳湘婷), Chen Yi-hsuan (陳以瑄) and Lee Ying-hsian (李映萱) in the women’s team category, with a final score of 7.680.    [FULL  STORY]

Summer Universiade until France scored four runs in the final inning, upsetting the hosts 4-3.

Center fielder Wang Cheng-tang gifted the win to France when he misjudged a fly ball on loaded bases, with two outs for France and down by 3-1.

Wang ran to catch the fly ball, for what should have been the final out, but dropped it, and three French players scampered home to snatch a dramatic win for the visitors at Taipei’s Tianmu Baseball Stadium.

The hosts seized one run in the fifth inning, then added two more in the eighth frame to lead 3-0 going into the final inning.    [FULL  STORY]

punched and kicked her way to Taiwan’s first medal of the 2017 Taipei Universiade by taking a silver medal in the Taekwondo women’s individual poomsae (forms, 品勢) event on Sunday.

Though Lin was leading all competitors in the first round with a score of 8.16, Thi Le Kim Nguyen of Vietnam edged out her Taiwanese opponent to capture the gold in the second round with a total score of 7.593 to Lin’s 7.540.

Adalis J Munoz of the United States and Fatemeh Hesam of Iran took third and fourth places, respectively, both of whom were awarded bronze medals.

UNIVERSIADE: Taiwan loses to France in preliminary baseball game

Taipei, Aug. 20 (CNA) Taiwan’s baseball team lost to France 3-4 in the preliminary round of the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei on Sunday.

The Taiwan team scored one point in the first half of the fifth inning and then took a 3-0 lead in the eighth inning.

However, due to a series of errors, the team gave up three hits in the ninth inning, allowing the France to score their first point in the game.

France went on to score another three points as Taiwan’s center-fielder Wang Cheng-tang (王正棠) missed a catch, and Taiwan lost 3-4.    [FULL  STORY]
