It was the best showing in the mixed doubles category for Taiwan at the championships.

Chiang and Chen won the championship bronze in Zagreb, Croatia in 2007, and bronze in Manchester, England in 1997.

Chen Chien-an and Chuan Chih-yuan won the men’s doubles after defeating Hong Kong duo Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem in the semi-final by four games to three.

Hsieh, looking to reach the last-16 of a Grand Slam for just the second time, led 3-1 in the final set before Garcia reeled off four games on the trot.

The Frenchwoman failed to close it out initially, with Hsieh serving for the match at 6-5.

Hsieh advances to third round in Paris

Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei yesterday advanced to the third round of the women’s singles at the French Open, while Elina Svitolina, this year’s best singles player, survived a second-round scare.

World No. 109 Hsieh defeated Taylor Townsend of the US 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 in 1 hour, 36 minutes on Court 17 at Roland Garros.

The Taiwanese won seven of 14 break points and won 86 of the 158 points contested to advance to the third round at the second Grand Slam of the year in Paris, Hsieh’s adopted home.

The French Open is one of Hsieh’s favorite events. The former world doubles No. 1 won the doubles title at Roland Garros in 2014 and she also now lives in the city where she met her boyfriend last year.    [FULL  STORY]

Lawmakers invited the 23-year-old soccer player from Wigan near Manchester to a news conference in Taipei, where they pointed out that the country has no framework to help descendants of Taiwanese people return to the island and play for national sports teams.

Taiwan’s Chan Yung-jan and John Peers of Australia crashed out of the first round of the mixed doubles at the French Open yesterday, while two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova’s comeback was cut short when she was dumped out of the second round of the women’s singles by Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Top seeds Chan and Peers fell to a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to Abigail Spears of the US and Juan Sebastian Cabal of Colombia in just 58 minutes on Court 4 at Roland Garros in Paris.

Spears and Cabal saved three of four break points and converted four of seven to stun the pre-tournament favorites.

In the second round of the women’s singles, 15th seed Kvitova, who had only returned this week after a five-month injury absence following a stabbing by a burglar last year, littered the court with errors to lose 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/5).    [FULL  STORY]

National basketball squad to battle China in opener

The national basketball team, under the guidance of new head coach Chou Chun-san, is to face China this weekend and continue their traditionally fierce rivalry at the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) East Asia Basketball Championship.

The team leaves tomorrow for Nagano, Japan, where the tournament is set to begin on Saturday, with the hosts in Group A along with South Korea and Macau, while Taiwan face China and Hong Kong in Group B.

In Saturday’s main events, Taiwan’s hoop take on China, while hosts Japan take on South Korea.

The national squads are to be battling to qualify for the FIBA Asia Cup, with the top three teams securing berths in the international competition, which this year is to be hosted by Lebanon from Aug. 8 to Aug. 20.    [FULL  STORY]

Doubles specialist Hsieh, 31, recovered from a dreadful start to knock off seventh seed Konta 1-6, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

“I tried very hard and gave myself a big chance. Every time I tried to run as fast as I can and get the ball back,” said Hsieh, who won for the just the second time in seven trips to Roland Garros. “I like to do some different stuff. I think it’s quite fun to play the match like that, I don’t know if that’s really nice or but I like to go out on court and enjoy the match.”

Lu’s Roland Garros bid lasted just 2 hours, 7 minutes as he fell to a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) defeat to hard-hitting Sergiy Stakhovsky.

The Ukrainian world No. 123 fired 16 aces to Lu’s four and converted two of seven break points, while Lu failed to create a single break-point opportunity on Court 10.

The Taichung Blue Whale battled to a scoreless draw against Hualien County on Saturday at Kaohsiung’s National Stadium.

The Blue Whale’s failure to pick up points meant they dropped to second place on the league ladder, with three wins and one draw, for 10 points from four games.
