Switzerland won the Internazionali BNL d’Italia women’s doubles title in Rome on Sunday.

The second-seeded Chan and Hingis took the title with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win over top seeds Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova of Russia, to give the duo some momentum heading into the upcoming French Open, where Chan will be seeking the first Grand Slam title of her career.

She has come close before, reaching the women’s double final of the Australian Open and US Open in 2007 and of the Australian Open in 2015.    [FULL  STORY]

Lu takes second with 14-under par in JLPGA contest

Open in Japan with a score of 14-under par, two shots behind winner Momoko Ueda of Japan.

Lu started yesterday tied for fourth at eight-under 136 after the first two rounds of the Japan LPGA event and birdied three of the first five holes to move up the leaderboard.

However, Ueda, who was one spot ahead of Lu after the first two rounds, birdied her first three holes to keep pace.

Ueda later fell back into a tie for first with Lu after bogeying the 15th hole, but she birdied two of the last three holes while Lu could only manage pars to win the ¥70 million (US$629,129) tournament.

Ueda shot a 7-under 65 in the final round to Lu’s 6-under 66 to secure the two-shot victory.

Taipei-born Lu, who has been a regular on the Japan LPGA Tour since 2010, has won 13 JLPGA titles as of last month.

After her second-place finish yesterday, Lu ranks seventh on the Japan LPGA money list with winnings of ¥33.8 million so far this year.    [FULL  STORY]

Having sustained an ankle injury during a high jump challenge the previous day, Liu showed tremendous willpower to complete the game, nabbing the gold with 5,982 points.

The silver medal went to India’s Mohit, who scored 5,976 points.

Taipower and Taipei-based Tatung, cruised to easy wins this weekend with only two points separating them at the top of the table, with the title race likely going down to the final round in October for this inaugural season.

Taipower on Saturday collected three points when they thrashed Fu Jen Catholic University-Hang Yuan team 8-1 at Tainan’s Yonghua Soccer Ground. They have 42 points to hold down first place.

Attacking midfielder Huang Han-sheng scored a hat-trick, with one before the break and then netting two late goals in the second half to earn man-of-the-match honor.

into the knockout round at an Asian youth tournament in Singapore earlier this month, from which they brought home valuable experience of playing against top-level competition and the thrill of meeting two former England internationals — Paul Parker and Emile Heskey.

The Master Football Academy (MFA) under-12 team were the sole representatives from Taiwan at this year’s Junior Soccer School & League (JSSL) International Sevens competition in Singapore, which took place from April 29 to May 1.

According to the organizers, the event is the biggest international youth soccer tournament in Asia, with 270 teams from 15 nations.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei city turns gym field into swimming pool for Universiade

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — With Taipei Summer Universiade around the corner, Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) posted an article on his Facebook, saying that the city has complete the construction of a temporary standard swimming pool in 60 days by new techniques.

Ko also shared a video that showed how foreign engineers were taking the measurement and how a work crew was assembling the pool piece by piece. He also mentioned that many swimming pools built for the international competition were hard to maintain after the competition is over and usually ended up becoming disused public property.

This time, Taipei city decided to adopt new techniques and install a movable swimming pool at the gym of National Taiwan Sport University, while the whole set of the temporary swimming pool was airlifted to Taiwan from overseas.

Taiwan’s Chan Yung-jan and Martina Hingis of Switzerland kept their bid for a second straight title on track at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia yesterday, while sixth seed Simona Halep advanced to the final of the singles.

Second seeds Chan and Hingis battled to a 6-3, 7-6 (9/7) semi-final victory over third seeds Sania Mirza of India and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan in 1 hour, 44 minutes at the Foro Italico in Rome.

The Taiwanese-Swiss duo saved three of five break points and converted three of eight to advance to a final against top-seeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina or fourth seeds Timea Babos of Hungary and Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic, who were playing later yesterday.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s Chan reaches semis in Rome

Taiwan’s Chan Yung-jan and doubles partner Martina Hingis reached the semi-finals of the women’s doubles at the the Internazionali BNL d’Italia yesterday.
The Taiwanese-Swiss pairing defeated Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia and Abigail Spears of the US 6-2, 6-4 to stay on track for back-to-back titles after winning the Mutua Madrid Open on Saturday last week.

In the men’s draw, third seed Stanislas Wawrinka became the latest high-profile casualty at on Thursday when the Swiss was knocked out in the third round by John Isner of the US, who also defeated Marin Cilic in the first quarter-final, which finished just before press time last night.

Isner took his ace count to 72 in three rounds as he powered past Wawrinka on Thursday 7-6 (7/1), 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals.

He then battled into the semis yesterday with a 7-6 (7/3), 2-6, 7-6 (7/2) win over sixth seed Cilic.    [FULL  STORY]

back-to-back doubles titles on track at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Wednesday, while top seed Angelique Kerber was not so fortunate, losing her opening match at the Foro Italico to Estonian qualifier Anett Kontaveit.

Second seeds Chan and Hingis rallied from a set down against Nao Hibino of Japan and Alicja Rosolska of Poland to edge a tight second-round contest 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 in 1 hour, 38 minutes.

The Taiwanese-Swiss duo saved three of six break points and converted three of six, winning 75 of the 144 points contested to advance to the quarter-finals in Rome.

The second seeds are looking for a third title as a pairing and the second in a week after they triumphed at the Mutua Madrid Open on Saturday.

In the women’s singles, world No. 1 Kerber fell to a shock 6-4, 6-0 loss to Kontaveit.

The organizer will play international movies by theme for each night from May 19 to May 21. Six specially-selected sports movies from Canada, Netherlands, Singapore, Germany, Australia, and France are all first to the public in Taiwan. Two sports movies from Taiwan–“Step back to glory” (志氣) and “Jump! Boys” (翻滾吧!男孩)–that are both awarded Golden Horse Awards will also be played, according to the organizer.
