the season and gave the Brothers Baseball Club a 2-0 triumph over front-runners Lamigo Monkeys at the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium.

The result helped the Brothers win the series by taking two-out-of-three games between the two sides since Friday.

Roman got the better of his opposition, starting left-handed pitcher Wang “Pretty Sister” Yi-cheng, as Roman went through seven frames to strike out eight and yielded only two hits to silence the simian batters.

Roman upped his record to 3-2, and lowered his ERA from 3.24 in the previous game to 2.77.

Lamigo starter Wang struck out for eight and pushed his record to 3-5.

The game’s Most Valuable Player award went to Brothers’ reserve catcher Huang Chun-sheng, who had three hits and drove in both runs in the contest.

“The three hits I got was also my career high. I really enjoyed it tonight and hope to stay healthy, with no more injuries to keep me out of action,” Huang said after the game.    [FULL  STORY]

Chan fails in final as Taiwanese gear up for French Open

Chan Yung-jan yesterday failed to complete a hat-trick of titles this month at the Internationaux de Strasbourg, but the Taiwanese will none the less head to the French Open as the pre-tournament favorite to win her first Grand Slam.

Following back-to-back wins in Madrid and Rome alongside Martina Hingis, the Taiwanese teamed up with younger sister Chan Hao-ching this week, but failed extend her 11-match winning streak, falling to a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Australian duo Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua in 1 hour, 18 minutes in the doubles final in Strasbourg, France.

The Australians saved 10 of 11 break points and converted four of eight as they claimed their second title of the year following their victory at the Malaysian Open in March.

The victory gave the Australians a 2-0 career record against the Chan sisters after they won their previous encounter, a semi-final victory in Strasbourg in 2014.

Chan Yung-jan yesterday kept her bid for a third straight WTA Tour doubles title on track in Strasbourg, France, while fellow Taiwanese Chuang Chia-jung on Thursday survived a scare to advance to the semi-finals of the doubles in Nuremberg, Germany.

Chan, who won back-to-back titles in Madrid and Rome alongside Martina Hingis, has been reunited with younger sister Chan Hao-ching this week at the Internationaux de Strasbourg and the Taiwanese top seeds took just 46 minutes to complete a 6-0, 6-1 semi-final victory over Chantal Skamlova of Slovakia and Eva Wacanno of the Netherlands.

The Chan sisters saved six of seven break points and converted all six they created to advance to today’s final, in which they face Australia duo Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua.

In the singles quarter-finals on Thursday, fifth seed and home-crowd favorite Caroline Garcia saved six set points on the way to a 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 victory over Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic.    [FULL  STORY]

Hsu’s seven-under-par equaled the second-best round of her LPGA Tour career and was an incredible 13-stroke improvement over her opening round last year at the Travis Pointe Country Club in Ann Arbor.

“It was really great start. I mean from the very first hole,” said Hsu, who shot a 78 in the first round last year and missed the cut.

“I had my seven-iron and I just hit it right at the pin. I didn’t see it very well. I just heard my mom and the gallery on the side, and they were all just cheering,” she added.

Chan Yung-jan kept her bid for a third consecutive WTA Tour doubles title on track in Strasbourg, France, yesterday, while fellow Taiwanese Chuang Chia-jung and Misaki Doi of Japan stunned the top seeds in the first round of the doubles in Nuremberg, Germany, on Tuesday.

Chan, who won the Mutua Madrid Open and Internazionali BNL d’Italia titles with Martina Hingis the past two weekends, has been reunited with younger sister Chan Hao-ching this week at the Internationaux de Strasbourg and the top seeds took 1 hour, 15 minutes to see off the challenge of Raluca Olaru of Romania and Olga Savchuk of Ukraine 6-1, 6-4 in their quarter-final.

BANGKOK — Liu Tsu-yuan (劉祖沅) of Taiwan fought through pain to win boys’ decathlon title Sunday at the Asian Youth Athletics Championships in Bangkok.

Having sustained an ankle injury during a high jump challenge the previous day, Liu showed tremendous willpower to complete the game, nabbing the gold with 5,982 points.

The silver medal went to India’s Mohit, who scored 5,976 points.

Liu has conquered quite a number of obstacles before coming to the final event — the 1,500-meter run, including breaking of his pole in the pole vault challenge earlier Sunday.

4-1 in a preliminary round match held on Australia’s Gold Coast to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Total BWF Sudirman Cup.

Russia is now out of the competition after having played and lost to South Korea in an earlier round robin encounter.

Taiwan started off with a win in the mixed doubles, as Taiwan’s Lee Chia-hsin (李佳馨) and Wang Chi-lin (王齊麟) dispatched the Russian duo of Ekaterina Bolotova and Vladimir Ivanov with relative ease 21-19, 21-11.

Taipower and Taipei-based Tatung, cruised to easy wins this weekend with only two points separating them at the top of the table, with the title race likely going down to the final round in October for this inaugural season.

Taipower on Saturday collected three points when they thrashed Fu Jen Catholic University-Hang Yuan team 8-1 at Tainan’s Yonghua Soccer Ground. They have 42 points to hold down first place.

Attacking midfielder Huang Han-sheng scored a hat-trick, with one before the break and then netting two late goals in the second half to earn man-of-the-match honor.
