Taoyuan City win U12 Toto Cup

The Taoyuan City team prevailed over Taitung County 6-5 yesterday to claim the Toto Cup Little League Championship title, while Nantou County overwhelmed Chiayi County 15-0 in the battle for third place at Taipei’s Youth Park baseball field.

With the title win, Taoyuan City earned the right to represent Taiwan at the Asia-Pacific Zone playoffs in the U12 Division, which is to take place in Fukuoka, Japan, in July.

The winner there would go on to play at the Pony Bronco Division World Little League Championship, hosted by the US in August.

Sports officials and coaches have high expectations for the Taoyuan City youngsters, since the Kaohsiung City team last summer won the Pony Bronco Division’s world title.    [FULL  STORY]

Wife of Taipei 101 Run Up record holder to take part in event

Taipei, May 6 (CNA) The wife of the men’s record holder in the Taipei 101 Run Up

will don her husband’s shirt and take part in the grueling challenge.

The run up is now in its 13th year, and organizers said they are offering NT$200,000 (US$6,626) to runners who can shatter the previous record.

The records for both men and women were set in the first year — Paul Crake of Australia set the men’s record in 10 minutes and 29 seconds, while Andrea Mayr of Austria set the women’s record in 12 minutes and 38 seconds.

This year’s event is slated for Sunday, with the contestants climbing 91 floors — 390 meters in all and 2,046 steps.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan to hold its first space out competition in October

Taipei, April 30 (CNA) Taiwan will hold its first space out competition in October, following the lead of South Korea, with the aim of promoting a life free from stress and digital overload.

Inspired in South Korea in 2014 by a conceptual art piece by visual artist WoopsYang, a space out competition encourages people to stare off into space without talking or using their phones.

A Taiwan company has won the right to hold the country’s first contest in October.

The 2017 competition in South Korean took place Sunday in Seoul’s Ichon Hangang Park, with last year’s winner –famous local rapper Shin Hyo-Seob, aka Crush — as a special guest.    [FULL  STORY]

Hurdler Chen Chieh ‘surprised’ by AAA Grand Prix win

Taipei, April 30 (CNA) Taiwanese athlete Chen Chieh (陳傑) said he was surprised by his 49.67-seconds win of the 400-meter hurdle race in the first ever Asia Athletic Association’s Grand Prix meet in Taiwan Sunday.

“I was expecting just to break the 50-seconds mark to qualify for the Asian Athletics Championships,” he told the media after winning the event in Taipei.

His fellow countryman Yu Chia-hsuan (余嘉軒) also qualified for the championships after registering 50.45, beating the 50.50 threshold for the event.

Another Taiwan athlete, Yang Chun-han (楊俊瀚), finished the 200-m sprint in 20.78 seconds in the semifinal, also beating the Asia championships threshold of 21.02 seconds.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying wins Badminton Asia title

Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎), the world’s top-ranked women’s badminton player,

(CNA) Taiwan badminton sensation Tai Tzu-ying.

defeated Akane Yamaguchi of Japan on Sunday to win the women’s singles title at the Badminton Asia Championships in Wuhan, China.

Tsai beat Yamaguchi 18-21, 21-11, 21-18 in three sets, becoming the first Taiwanese to win a title at the Asian tournament since it was launched in 1962.

It was Tsai’s sixth straight World Super Series title and followed her win at the World BWF Super Series Singapore Open Badminton Championship on April 16.

After the game, Tsai said she will not get carried away by the excitement of the win and will continue to do her best in every tournament.    [FULL  STORY]

women’s badminton player, defeated Lee Jang Mi of South Korea on Saturday to reach the finals of the women’s singles at the Badminton Asia Championships 2017 in Wuhan, China.

After beating Lee in the semifinals in two straight games, 21-8 and 21-16, Tai will face Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the final.

The Japanese player, the second seed in the tournament, emerged as the other finalist after defeating He Bingjiao of the host country, 21-15 and 21-19, in the other semifinal match played Saturday.    [FULL  STORY]

league, defeating the Royal Blues 4-0 yesterday to continue their dominance at the top of the table, while Ming Chuan University put home-field advantage to full use in a 7-1 thrashing of Tainan City in the second match of the day.

The Royal Blues, or the “expatriate” team, had their fourth straight loss since a 0-0 draw against Fu Jen University on April 15.

Taiwanese Wu Ching-kuo (吳經國) to serve another term as Chair of the Culture and Olympic Heritage Commission and coordinator for the XXIV Olympic Winter Games Beijing in 2022.

Both nominations were officially announced by IOC President Thomas Bach on April 18.

Wu, who has been a member of the IOC Executive Board since 2012, is also the president of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) which is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland.

He said his goals are to actively promote Olympic activities, maintain an international space for the participation of Taiwanese athletes and look out for Taiwan’s interests in the international sports arena.    [FULL  STORY]

allegedly unfurled a banner in an Asian Champions League match on Tuesday describing Hong Kong’s independence movement as “poison” and carrying the words: “Annihilate British dogs.”

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said it was looking into the incident, which occurred in the latter stages of Guangzhou’s 6-0 win over Hong Kong champions Eastern.

“The AFC is waiting for the match commissioner’s report and then the AFC will make a full assessment of the facts,” a spokesperson for the confederation told reporters.

The report was expected to be received by the continental body yesterday, with a decision on any further action due to be taken over the next few days.
