Jeremy Lin to join Charlotte Hornets (update 2)

Taipei, July 9 (CNA) Jeremy Lin (林書豪), the first NBA player of Taiwanese descent, 201507090010t0001announced Thursday that he will join the Charlotte Hornets next season after one season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

A league source told Yahoo Sports that Lin’s deal with the Hornets will be “two-year, US$4 million-plus.”

Lin became an unrestricted free agent July 1 after his three-year, US$25 million contract expired at the end of last season.

The 26-year-old guard made the announcement on his Facebook page, saying that he will do his best to contribute to his new team.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s baseball team wins second in a row at Universiade

Taipei, July 8 (CNA) Taiwan’s national baseball won its second game in a row in the 201507080039t0001preliminary round of the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea on Wednesday, defeating the United States 5-3 in 10 innings.

The victory left Taiwan on top of Group B and well-positioned to advance to the eight-team tournament’s semifinal round.

Taiwan, which won its first Group B game against Mexico 9-1 on Monday, plays the Czech Republic (1-1) on Thursday to determine whether it makes it into the final four.     [FULL  STORY]

the major leagues in the United States, has been called up by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Tsao, who last pitched in the major leagues in 2007, signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers in January and has made 21 appearances as a reliever for the Oklahoma City Dodgers, going 2-1 with an ERA of 3.86 and converting five of seven save opportunities.

It was not known if the move is a stopgap measure to provide temporary relief to a Dodger bullpen that has pitched a lot of innings recently or if the Dodgers see him as a longer-term option.

The 34-year-old Hualien native became the first Taiwanese pitcher to play in the major leagues when he took the mound for the Colorado Rockies in 2003.     [FULL  STORY]

After losing the first set of their third-round match against Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany and Coco Vandeweghe of the US, the Taiwanese-American duo bounced back to take the second to love and level the match.

Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching bowed out of the women’s doubles on “Manic Monday” at Wimbledon yesterday, beaten in the third round by the fifth seeds.

Chan and Alison van Uytvanck looked to be facing a tough task against US duo Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, and that is how it proved on Court 11 at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in southwest London.

The Taiwanese-Belgian duo failed to convert any of their three break points, while their American opponents converted three of eight, winning 68 of the 123 points contested to complete a 6-2, 6-4 victory in 1 hour, 14 minutes.      [FULL  STORY]

Chan Yung-jan the latest to fall to curse of Court 5

Chan Yung-jan became the fourth Taiwanese player to fall foul of the curse of Court 5 at Wimbledon on Saturday as she crashed out of the second round of the mixed doubles.

It is uncertain at this time which team he will go with because it will depend on the movement of other players in the free-agent market, he told reporters.
