National women’s basketball team gets new player

Taipei women’s basketball team that is scheduled to participate in the 37th William Jones Cup later this month, the secretary of the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association said Tuesday.

The tournament will be held July 27-31 at the Taipei Gymnasium. Taiwan’s women’s national teams, ROC A and ROC B ranked 4th and 5th, respectively, in last year’s competition.

Burke, who plays in the National Collegiate Athletic Association for the Arizona State Sun Devils, is 1.96 meters tall. The 24-year-old center played 33 games in the 2013-14 season, averaging 7.3 points on 51.4 shooting, 4.8 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game.     [FULL  STORY]

The Taiwanese sisters, who traveled to Sweden having both participated at Wimbledon, defeated Evgeniya Rodina of Russia and Stephanie Vogt of Liechtenstein 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of the doubles in 1 hour, 12 minutes.

The No. 1 seeds saved four of six break points and converted four of eight, winning 66 of the 117 points contested on the Swedish clay courts.

In the quarter-finals, the Taiwanese duo face either Tatjana Maria of Germany and Olga Savchuk of Ukraine or Swedish wild-cards Cornelia Lister and Malin Ulvefeldt, who are due to play their first-round match today.     [FULL  STORY]

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Point guard Jeremy Lin is in search of some stability with the Charlotte Hornets.

Lin said he has no regrets about leaving the New York Knicks after the 2012 season to sign with the Houston Rockets during his introductory press conference Monday. But the 26-year-old, one-year sensation made it pretty clear he’s eager to find the right fit.

Three teams removed from “Linsanity” fame, Lin believes he may have found it with the Hornets.

The 23-year-old was 11-under-par on the weekend to score a two-shot win over Sweden’s Robert Karlsson and earned the top prize of 31,500 Canadian dollars, according to a report by Canadian newspaper Winnipeg Sun. He carded a four-day total of 15-under 269.

Taekwondo competitors Chuang Chia-chia (莊佳佳), Huang Kuan-chi (黃冠錡), Huang Yun-wen (黃韻文), and Lin Yi-ching (林宜青) lost to China 7-9 and had to settle for sharing the bronze medal with the Korean women based their score ranking in team kyorugi, the new Taekwondo category at the Universiade.

Gwangju, South Korea, July 12 (CNA) Kelly Chang (張凱貞) of Taiwan won the gold 201507120010t0001medal in the tennis women’s singles Sunday at the 2015 Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea, beating Luksika Kumkhum of Thailand in two straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

Chang, ranked 201st in the world, trounced the 125th-ranked Kumkhum in less than an hour at the Yeomju Indoor Tennis Court.

Chang’s coach, Ho Kuo-lung (何國龍) said he would give her a 100-point score for “suppressing her rival throughout the game, without relenting for a moment.”

Chang herself was a bit more reserved in rating her victory, attributing it in part to playing on an indoor court because of rain.     [FULL  STORY]

Huang Sheng-sheng (黃聖盛) pulled off a 3-2 win over their Japanese counterparts to win men’s doubles gold medal at the 2015 University Games in Guangju, South Korea Sunday.

The Taiwanese beat the Japanese duo of Masataka Morizono and Yuya Oshima 4-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-8 and 11-7 to defend Chinese Taipei’s men’s doubles title earned two years ago. Sunday’s win also marked Taiwan’s third gold in this event at the Universiade.

In women’s doubles, Taiwanese pair Lee Yi-chen (李依真) and Cheng Yi-ching (鄭怡靜) had to settle for silver after losing to China’s Che Xiaoxi (車曉曦) and Jiang Yue (江越) 2-4.     [FULL  STORY]
