Taiwanese baseball team wins ticket to LLB world series

Taipei, July 20 (CNA) Taiwan beat South Korea 3-2 in the finals of the Little League Baseball 201507200008t0002(LLB) Asia-Pacific Tournament in China on Monday, winning a place in the LLB World Series in the United States.

The Taiwanese team from Tung Yuan Elementary School in Taipei was neck to neck with the South Koreans for most of the game and fell one point behind until the bottom of the sixth inning, when it scored two runs to take the lead.

The Taipei team maintained the lead until the end of the game, securing a berth in the LLB world series, which will be held Aug. 20-30 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.     [FULL STORY]

Lin Yi-chuan is fastest to 1,000 hits

EDA Rhinos slugger Lin Yi-chuan set a new Taiwanese professional baseball record over the weekend, reaching the 1,000-hit mark in the fewest games and with the fewest appearances at the plate.

Lin hit a single in the sixth inning to become the fastest player to get 1,000 hits during his side’s encounter with the Chinatrust Brothers at his home park in Kaohsiung on Saturday night.

It took him 744 games and 3,168 at-bats to accomplish the feat, which broke the previous fastest marks of 837 games by Lin Chih-sheng of the Lamigo Monkeys and 3,469 at-bats by Peng Cheng-min of the Chinatrust Brothers.     [FULL  STORY]

(周天成) was unable to complete a stunning run of upsets this week when he lost to world No. 1 Chen Long (諶龍)of China in the men’s singles final of the Yonex Open Taipei 2015 on Sunday.

Chou, who ranks eighth in the world in the Badminton World Federation rankings, got off to a strong start but eventually could not cope with Chen’s expertly placed drop shots and lost 15-21, 21-6, 21-9.

Still, it was the first time that Chou had even won a game off Chen in five encounters.

Hopes were high among Chou’s supporters ahead of the final after he outlasted world No. 5 Lin Dan (林丹) of China 21-19, 18-21, 21-16 in a marathon 77-minute semifinal match to become the only Taiwanese ever to beat the 2008 and 2012 Olympic gold medalist.     [FULL  STORY]

Lu Yen-hsun wrapped up a rain-affected Davis Cup victory over the Philippines yesterday after his reverse singles rubber was relocated from Kaohsiung to Tainan.

The Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group II second-round match, which had been taking place at the Kaohsiung Yangming Tennis Courts on Friday and Saturday, was relocated to Tainan due to the weather, but that did not disrupt the Taiwanese world No. 61, who eased to a 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Ruben Gonzales in his singles rubber.     [FULL  STORY]

MANILA, Philippines – Fil-Ams Treat Conrad Huey and Ruben Gonzales turned back Lee Hsin spo5newHan and Peng Hsien Yin with a gripping 6-3, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) victory that resuscitated the Philippines’ bid for a return stint to the Davis Cup Group I play in their Asia-Oceania Zone Group II tie in Taiwan Saturday.

Facing the specter of an early defeat after Jeson Patrombon and PJ Tierro dropped an identical 2-6, 2-6, 1-6 match to Hung Jui Chen and Lu Yen Hsun, respectively, in Friday’s opening singles, Huey and Gonzales responded to the challenge by coming through with a life-saving win.

Taiwan’s Hsu Wei-ling, Sarah Kemp, Nannette Hill and Lee-Anne Pace were tied for second at four-under.

Jang chipped to 6 feet (1.8m) to set up the final birdie after hitting a three-wood approach to the front edge.

“Just really good shot,” Jang said about the chip with a 52o wedge.

“I feel happy today, because in the morning … I was very tired in my bed, so no practice today. I don’t think about the score, so really good play today,” Jang said.

Winless in 23 career tour events, Jang birdied four of the first five holes on the back nine at Highland Meadows, dropped a stroke on the par-four 15th and rallied with the closing birdie.     [FULL  STORY]

after they cruised to a 2-0 lead against the Philippines on the Kaohsiung Yangming Tennis Courts.

Hung Jui-chen eased to a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jeson Patrombon in the first singles rubber on the hard courts in Kaohsiung, before world No. 61 Lu Yen-hsun gave the hosts a 2-0 lead with a comfortable victory over Patrick-John Tierro by exactly the same score.

Taiwan have the chance to clinch the match at 10am today, when Lee Hsin-han and Peng Hsien-yin take on Philippine duo Ruben Gonzales and Treat Huey in the doubles rubber.

Even if Lee and Peng fail, Hung and Lu will have a chance to wrap up the victory in the reverse singles at 11am tomorrow.

Although the Philippines have a 4-2 overall record against Taiwan in the Davis Cup, Taiwan won the previous two encounters in 2010 and 2011, with the Philippines’ last victory coming in 1999.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, July 16 (CNA) Taiwan defeated Indonesia 21-0 in 3 innings to clench the Asia-Pacific Zone championship of the PONY Baseball League’s Bronco division in Fukuoka, Japan, on Thursday.

Meanwhile, also in Fukuoka, Taiwan’s Pony division (under age 14) team swept the tournament defeating Japan 12-3, Hong Kong 12-3, Japan HOST 10-0, to win the Asia-Pacific Zone championship and qualified for the Pony division of the PONY World Series.     [FULL  STORY]

Chan sisters fail to survive meltdown at Swedish Open

The Chan sisters failed to survive a second-set meltdown at the Swedish Open in Bastad yesterday as the top seeds crashed out in the quarter-finals.

Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan, the world No. 34 and No. 22 in the doubles rankings, were stunned 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 by world No. 84 Tatjana Maria and world No. 59 Olga Savchuk on the Scandinavian clay courts.

The Taiwanese duo saved seven of nine break points and converted three of six to take the first set, but their German-Ukrainian opponents then saved all three break points they faced in the second set and converted three of six to level the quarter-final at one set each.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan defeat S Korea 7-0 in Pony baseball qualifier

Taiwan defeated South Korea 7-0 in the Asia-Pacific Zone qualifying tournament of the Pony Baseball League’s Pony division in Fukuoka, Japan, on Wednesday.

The win put Taiwan on top of their group in the qualifying tournament and moved them a step closer toward clinching a spot in the Pony World Series, which is to take place in Pennsylvania next month.

Taiwan opened the scoring in the third inning, when Wu Chih-lun walked, advanced to third on a double and scored on a wild pitch.     [FULL  STORY]
