International Baseball Stadium last night to even their road series in northern Taiwan at one win apiece following Friday night’s series-opening loss.

Warner Madrigal entered in the bottom of the ninth with a 3-1 lead and walked in a run with one out after loading up the bases to put the tying run 27m from the plate.

However, the Lions closer was able to retire the next two batters in a row by striking out Lin “Chubby Kid” Hung-yu and getting Kuo Yen-wen to ground out to second to preserve the victory for the visitors in a dramatic finish.

The Cats needed little time drawing first blood, as they rang up three singles and a walk off Monkeys starter Jared Lansford in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.     [FULL  STORY]

“Sexy” Taiwanese cheerleading routines don’t seem to have much to do with sports 【Videos】

Not that Western cheerleading really has all that much to do with football or anything, and – screenhunter_116-apr-15-17-30last I checked – baseball in the US didn’t even have cheerleaders at all, but the logic goes that cheerleaders are there to get the crowd pumped up and into the competitive spirit. At least on paper, anyway.

In Taiwan, on the other hand, the cheerleaders at baseball games just kind of dance around in skimpy outfits like booth babes that got lost on their way to the auto show or something. It almost looks like they’re doing the exact opposite of what cheerleading is (ostensibly) all about, actually diverting spectators’ attention away from the game and pretty much guaranteeing that the men in the audience will need to remain seated.     [FULL  STORY]

Lions and Brothers earn close wins to provide CPBL drama

Close plays dominated the first two days of action this week, with the Uni-President Lions topping the EDA Rhinos 5-4 in Kaohsiung on Monday, and the Chinatrust Brothers rallying past the Lamigo Monkeys in a 7-5 comeback in Taichung on Tuesday evening to bring more drama to fans across the nation.

The Cats rode the right arm of starter Justin Thomas, who took a three-hit shutout one out into the bottom of the eighth before surrendering a run to lose his shutout bid. Even though he went on to pocket the win, it was anything but a breeze as the at-home Rhinos put up three runs in the bottom of the ninth against Warner Madrigal on the merit of a three-run blast by Cheng Da-hung, before the Lions closer retired the final two Rhinos hitters to preserve the narrow road thriller for his club.

That set up Tuesday night’s impressive comeback by the Brothers, who batted around the order in an explosive four-run eighth to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 7-5 lead for the eventual win.     [FULL  STORY]

EDA Rhinos beat Chinatrust

The EDA Rhinos swept the day-night doubleheader series by topping the Chinatrust Brothers 7-6 in a matinee meeting at the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium before closing out the deal by a 9-1 margin in the nightcap in Taichung last night.

The two victories not only gave the Rhinos a clean sweep in the three-game set against the Brothers, but lifted them past the 10-win plateau to net them a 2.5 game lead over the second-placed Lamigo Monkeys in the standings three weeks into the new season.

Chang Chien-ming’s solo homer off Brothers reliever Luo Kuo-hua in the top of the eighth proved to be the difference in the game, as it put the visitors ahead by three at that point, just enough to hold off a two-run rally by Chinatrust in the bottom of the ninth to send the Rhinos into the win column.     [FULL  STORY]
