Russia were overcome on Sunday by their opponents in the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada, but Chan will still hold the world No. 1 ranking in women’s doubles — for just a week or two.

Chan is passing on the Cincinnati Open, for which women’s doubles begin today, to participate in the Asian Games, which open in Indonesia on Sunday. So, her top ranking, made official yesterday, will likely last only until next week.

The Taiwanese-Russian pairing won their first set 6-4 against Australia’s Ashleigh Barty and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands, who staged a comeback 3-6 and 8-10 in two straight sets.

“Unfortunately we didn’t win the title this week, but it was only 2 points away from us, congrats to our opponents, it was a really good match, we all gave our best out there,” Chan wrote on Facebook.    [FULL  STORY]

Paris, Aug. 11 (CNA) Taiwan grabbed a total of 18 medals, including 10 gold, at the 2018 Gay Games that concluded in Paris on Saturday.

Chi Chia-wei (祁家威), a veteran gay rights activist and honorary team leader for Taiwan at the games, said the results, which also included five silver and three bronze medals, were better than expected.

Chi said he felt honored to be in Paris to cheer for Taiwanese athletes.

Taiwan has a chance to bid for the games host city in 2026, he said, with the vote to take place at an annual general meeting of the Federation of Gay Games in 2021.

Chi hoped that another Asian country can host the games after Hong Kong serves as host in 2022, he said.    [FULL  STORY]

Stefano Lilipaly scored a brace after the interval to lead the hosts to a 4-0 win in the Asian Games men’s soccer competition at Patriot Stadium in Bekasi, Indonesia.

Lilipaly found the net off a header in the 66th minute, and five minutes later the hosts doubled the lead when Brazil-born Alberto da Costa scored from a passing combination.

Lilipaly scored on a bicycle-kick on a cross a few minutes later, and substitute Muhammad Hargianto hit a long shot in injury-time to wrap up the match.

Taiwan had two good chances to score: One in the 17th minute, when defender Chen Ting-yang, after a free kick, found himself alone with the ball and only the goalkeeper to beat, but he hit the side netting. Another came just past the 30th minute, when midfielder Chen Chao-an had his shot cleared from in front of the goal line by Indonesia’s defense.    [FULL  STORY]
