Tai played a very strategic game, mixing up her shots beautifully to keep Zhang guessing the entire match, but for Tai, it was just business as usual.

“Everyone has adapted to my play, I assume,” Tai said. “It has barely changed.”

Tai has looked unstoppable this year, with only one loss in 36 matches. Her lone defeat came against Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon in the final of the Malaysia Masters in January.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s athletes are training hard at the National Sports Training Center in Kaohsiung in preparation for this month’s Asian Games in Jakarta. This year, Taiwan’ s biggest ever team will take part in the games. There are strong medal contenders in several categories, including weightlifting, gymnastics, and track & field.

President Tsai visited the center on Tuesday and saw the athletes training. She acknowledged the athletes’ efforts and said they will enjoy her full support at the games.

Tsai also reminded Sports Administration officials to provide the best support for Taiwan’s athletes during their final preparations. The goal, she said, is to free the competitors from any logistical worries and allow them to focus on their training and perform at their best.     [FULL  STORY]

New York, July 30 (CNA) Taiwanese pitcher Chien-Ming Wang (王建民), who returned to the minor league Staten Island Yankees at Richmond County Bank Ballpark Monday to throw out the first pitch and sign autographs for fans, said he will not rule out coaching if the opportunity arises.

Age certainly plays a toll on the body, the 38-year old pitcher said, admitting that his physical stamina would make it difficult for him to remain at the Major League level.

Although he has not officially announced his retirement from baseball, the former ace pitcher for the New York Yankees said that he is leaning more toward coaching, because he hopes to pass on his knowledge to the next generation of young players wishing to play in the United States.

Wang, who attended the July 29 premiere of a documentary featuring the latter years of his professional baseball career, advised young players from Taiwan to never give up on their dreams, and urged those already playing in the Minor League to hang tough.

Taiwan’s Liang En-shuo’s bid for a first WTA Tour title was yesterday ended by third seed Magda Linette at the Jiangxi Open in Nanchang, China, but her progress to the quarter-finals will see her ranking improve next week.

The 17-year-old world No. 405, who won the Australian Open girls’ singles title in January, fell to a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 defeat to the Polish world No. 80 in 1 hour, 55 minutes in the first of yesterday’s quarter-finals.

In the first set, Liang converted one of the two break points she created, but failed to save three of four, with just a 39 percent success rate on her first serve.

Taipei, July 25 (CNA) Taiwan’s Sports Administration (SA) said Wednesday

Asian Games medal-winning cyclist Hsiao Mei-yu (photo courtesy of Sports Administration www.sa.gov.tw).

that the country will compete in the 2018 Asian Games next month normally in the wake of the East Asian Olympic Committee (EAOC) revoking Taichung’s right to host the first East Asian Youth Games a day earlier.

The decision to revoke was made at an EAOC extraordinary meeting in Beijing that was reportedly called by Chinese representatives to weigh whether or not to hold the Taichung event as planned in August 2019.

The Chinese side reportedly brought up the issue due to concern over a public campaign in Taiwan to hold a referendum on whether Taiwan should participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as “Taiwan” rather than its standard Olympic name of “Chinese Taipei.”    [FULL  STORY]
