Taiwan as Typhoon Dujuan approached the nation, gathering strength as it bore down on the east coast.

The military, working with local governments, evacuated people from areas vulnerable to falling rocks, mudslides and flooding in 39 townships and districts in Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, Hsinchu and Nantou counties and Taipei and New Taipei City.

New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu (朱立倫) said the vulnerable areas include Wulai District (烏來), which was hit hard by Typhoon Soudelor last month, with some residents unable to return home for weeks. Most shops and hotels in the hot springs town remain closed as roads and flood damage are yet to be fully repaired.

“To be honest, we all feel very depressed. Any damage might further prolong the time needed for reconstruction,” said Chou Chih-kang, an Wulai neighborhood leader.

Television footage showed fast-moving flood waters swamping roads just outside Taipei and huge waves crashing against the northeast coastline.     [FULL  STORY]

Typhoon Dujuan is currently centered about 1,300 kilometers southeast off the coast of Hualien, and heading west-northwest at six kilometers per hour.

Taiwan, Japan, China on Alert for Tropical Storm Dujuan

The corridor from Taiwan and eastern China to Japan is on alert for Tropical Storm 650x366_09232043_hd27Dujuan, which has the potential to strengthen into a significant typhoon.

Dujuan is currently far from a significant typhoon. The tropical storm is struggling to strengthen due to disruptive wind shear.

If the wind shear proves too much for Dujuan, AccuWeather Meteorologist Anthony Sagliani stated that it is possible that it may weaken further to a tropical wave without a low-level circulation. In this scenario, the tropical threat would diminish altogether for Japan and surrounding areas unless redevelopment can occur.

However, latest indications point toward Dujuan overcoming its battle with the wind shear and eventually strengthening into a typhoon.     [FULL  STORY]

it soaks up more energy from the sea, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Wednesday.

The region Goni is passing through is rich in warm ocean waters, and the heat stored in the ocean is a powerful trigger for cyclone development, said Cheng Ming-dean (鄭明典), director of the CWB forecast center.

On its current path, Goni could come closest to Taiwan over the weekend after changing its current westerly direction to a more northerly path Friday, moving up along Taiwan’s eastern coast, CWB data showed.

As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, Goni was some 1,150 kilometers east-southeast of Eluanbi, the southernmost tip of Taiwan, moving at a speed of 21 kilometers per hour in a westerly direction, according to the bureau.     [FULL  STORY]
