Warm welcome for Tsai in Paraguay

ASUNCION, Paraguay — President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) arrived in Paraguay on Monday night

(local time), the second and final leg of her first overseas trip since assuming office May 20.

She was welcomed at the airport by a military salute ceremony, and was received by Paraguay’s Foreign Minister Eladio Loizaga and Taiwan’s Ambassador to Paraguay Alexander Tah-ray Yui.

Despite a drizzle, hundreds of Taiwanese expatriates in Paraguay were also there to greet the Taiwan president, who wore a cream-white trench coat.

Tsai’s arrival in Taiwan’s only diplomatic ally in South America followed a trip to Panama, one of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies in Central America.

During her three-day stay in the South American country, Tsai will first call on Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes, address Paraguay’s Congress and meet with the president of the Senate, Mario Abdo Benitez, on Tuesday.     [FULL  STORY]
