this year, featuring performances by previous winners Eason Chan (陳奕迅) and Sandy Lam (林憶蓮) among others.

Chan, a Hong Kong singer who has been nominated again this year, will perform popular Mandarin songs from the 1990s with an 18-member band, the organizers said Wednesday.

Sandy Lam (林憶蓮), also of Hong Kong, will sing a song she wrote especially for Taiwan, while Taiwan’s Lala Hsu (徐佳瑩) will perform a compilation of songs by top female artists such as A-mei, Tanya Chua and Penny Tai.

Reggae-rock band Matzka, Hakka musician Ayugo Huang (黃連煜), and veteran rock band The Chairman (董事長) are also expected to turn up the heat at the awards show.     [FULL  STORY]

“A lot of money and time was spent on the documentary,” said William Chuang, director-general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver. He was joined at a media conference by festival partners from UBC Literature Etc. and the Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Society.

several concerts in different musical genres to showcase the diversity of music in Taiwan, according to the organizers.

The Global Music Festival concerts to be held from June 24-26 will feature 24 groups of musicians, including avant-garde electronic band Lie Gramophone, six-man rap group Boxing from the Paiwan indigenous people, jazz-pop singer Yan-JJ, Mandopop singer Victor Wong and electronic dance and rock band OVDS.

The concerts will include rock, folk, electronic, hip-hop and dance music, according to the Ministry of Culture’s Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development.

The annual festival promotes the Golden Melody Awards, Taiwan’s equivalent of the Grammy’s and the local music business. There will also be lectures, exhibitions, forums, music workshops and a platform for cross-music industry collaboration.     [FULL  STORY]

On May 31, Roy Kim attended 2014 HITO Music Award in Taipei, Taiwan. It is one of the biggest music award ceremonies in Taiwan and over 12,000 people attended.

Roy Kim is the first foreign artist outside of Chinese-speaking-countries to win this award. He won this award as his first studio album’s “Bom Bom Bom,” second studio album’s “Home,” and soundtrack “Pinocchio” became big hits in Taiwan.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, May 25 (CNA) Prominent Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢) won 201505250002t0002the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival in France on Sunday with his first martial arts film “The Assassin” (聶隱娘).

It is the first time Hou has ever won the best director award of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. It is also his second award at Cannes, having previously won the Jury Prize in 1993 with “The Puppetmaster.”

“I have been to Cannes for seven or eight times…It is a great encouragement for me to win the director award this time,” Hou said in his acceptance speech.     [FULL  STORY]

by internationally-renown Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien and other Taiwanese directors, the Taiwan Cultural Center in Paris said Friday.

The event, set to start from May 26, will be the largest-ever movie festival held by Taiwan to showcase the country’s achievements in the movie industry to audiences from around the world at a time when international movie critics have expressed admiration toward Hou’s latest movie The Assassin.

A Tang Dynasty martial arts film starting Taiwanese actress Shu Qi and actor Chang Chen, The Assassin is one of the 19 entries in the main competition at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival. Hou spent 10 years making the film.

The French newspaper Liberation even said that The Assassin has a great chance of winning the top prize in the Cannes Film Festival, which started on May 12 and will run through May 24. Le Figaro Magazine also selected The Assassin as one of the top 15 movies at this year’s festival.     [FULL  STORY]

presidential citation to be awarded posthumously to Taiwanese composer Ma Shui-long (馬水龍) in recognition of his contributions.

Ma’s compositions combined the musical traditions of the West and the East, creating a unique style that has deeply inspired other musicians in Taiwan, Culture Minister Hung Meng-chi (洪孟啟) said in a statement.

The composer died on May 2 at the age of 75 after a long battle against cancer.

Born in Keelung in 1939, Ma was the first Taiwanese composer to have his music performed at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York.     [FULL  STORY]

A charity tribute concert for Teng will take place in Tokyo on Saturday, during which the audience will be able to see a 3-D hologram of the singer. The image will be borrowed from Taiwan, where it was shown at a tribute concert on May 9.

The Tokyo concert is called the Teresa Teng Memorial Concert — Botsu Nijunen Tsuito Charity Ongakukai. It will feature such illustrious singers as Hiroshi Itsuki, Akari Uchida, en-Ray, Natsuko Godai, Toshimi Tagawa, Yoko Nagayama and Rimi Natsukawa, who will sing Teng’s hit songs.

Lyricist Toyohisa Araki will speak about his memories of Teng at the concert, which will be emceed by Kazuo Tokumitsu.     [FULL  STORY]

‘Brave Wind’ among local arms headed to Paris show

The locally developed Hsiung Feng III “Brave Wind” surface-to-surface anti-ship missile is to be put on display abroad for the first time at the International Paris Air Show next month, along with other advanced weaponry and technical equipment produced by the nation’s defense and aerospace industries.

The Taiwan Aerospace Industry Association (TAIA) on Monday said that the international community is interested in the Hsiung Feng III, which has been billed an “aircraft-carrier killer.”

The Tien Kung III “Sky Bow” surface-to-air missile, together with more than 20 other Taiwanese military items and weapons are to be on display at the show, which is to run from June 15 to June 21.

The Aerospace Industrial Development Corp, Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST) and Precision Engineering Products are to exhibit at the show.     [FULL  STORY]

nominees with nine nominations, including Best Mandarin Album, the jury announced Monday.

The album also garnered nods in the categories of Best Song of the Year, Best Music Video, Best Musical Arranger, Best Single Producer, Best Album Packaging and the newly established category of Best Album Recording.

Despite the strong performance of her album, however, Tsai did not gain a nod in the category of Best Mandarin Female Singer, which will be contended by Taiwan’s A-mei, Lala Hsu, Waa Wei, A-lin and Hong Kong’s Karen Mok, according to the list of nominees released by the Ministry of Culture’s Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development.

In the Best Mandarin Male Singer category, Hong Kong’s Jacky Cheung will be pitted against fellow Hong Kongers Eason Chan and Khalil Fong, and Taiwan’s William Wei and Yang Pei-an.

The six nominees for Best Mandarin Album are Play, Lala Hsu’s Missing, Jacky Cheung’s Wake Up Dreaming, Eason Chan’s Rice & Shine, Karen Mok’s Departures and Aiyo, Not Bad by Taiwan’s Jay Chou.     [FULL  STORY]
