the nation’s deadliest amusement park disaster was caused by colored cornstarch being ignited by stage lights, an official report said this week.

The cornstarch that had been sprayed over hundreds of partygoers at a Color Play Asia event exploded when it came into contact with the lights, whose surface temperatures reached more than 400°C, the report by the New Taipei City Fire Department said.

In the report, a special investigation taskforce said a careful assessment of the evidence and repeated experiments had shown that the heat given off by 200-watt incandescent bulbs in a row of portable “Beam 200” moving-head stage lights ignited the cornstarch, sparking the deadly blaze.

The lights had been placed on the right-hand side of the stage near the front.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s economy has been stagnant for years, with salary levels falling and most people

believing our economic policy is to blame. Failure to loosen regulations, high tax rates, the small margin by which the Taiwan dollar has depreciated and the failure to sign a significant number of free trade agreements (FTAs) are all blamed for the country’s economic woes. These are just small problems, however. Taiwan’s real problem is that society has become more and more prone to knee-jerk reactions.

Two weeks ago, Typhoon Soudelor brought power shutdowns and contaminated the water supply as it swept through the country. This caused unprecedented scenes of scuffles in supermarkets over bottled water and acts of violence against technicians working to restore power to the over 4.4 million households that experienced blackouts.

This kind of behavior suggests society is getting more impetuous, with people reacting to things without thinking them over. People glean information from the internet without waiting for verification and act out in an impulsive way as a result. This kind of impulsiveness is behind many of the social movements that have gripped Taiwan in recent years.     [FULL  STORY]

The company had invited Hatano to Taiwan for a photography session to produce images for two versions of her card, one “angel” and one “demon.”

Although the cards were not scheduled to be launched until Tuesday next week, there had already been a lot of discussion on the Internet, not only about the choice of Hatano, but that one image had been used on the cover of one of her adult videos.

EasyCard chairman Tai Chi-chuan (戴季全) said that a temporary hold had been placed on sales of the “angel” card, adding that there would be restrictions on where the card could be purchased so that buyer’s age requirements could be enforced.     [FULL  STORY]
