Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Eric Chu’s (朱立倫) delegation to China for this year’s Shanghai Cross-Strait Economic and Cultural Forums are violating administrative neutrality.

At the legislature’s Internal Administration Committee yesterday, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers said that the officials were incapable of distinguishing between party loyalty and their duty to the nation, accusing them of defying Article 8 of the Public Servants’ Administrative Neutrality Act (公務人員行政中立法).

Article 8 stipulates that public servants must not use powers, opportunities or methods granted by their office to aid or benefit political parties or other political groups of political candidates, nor accede to their requests, accept bribes in any form or donate in their interests.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, May 4 (CNA) The Philippines will soon launch a new online visa application system to make it easier for Taiwanese tourists to visit the Southeast Asian country to boost local tourism, the Philippines’ representative office in Taiwan said Monday. In a statement, the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) said it will launch an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which will allow Taiwanese passport holders to apply for and obtain an entry permit to the Philippines online. The new system will be available starting July 1, it said. With the ETA system, applications and payments for the travel authorization can be done online wherever applicants are at any time, it said.

“This is one of several ground-breaking measures that the Philippines is undertaking to bring in more Taiwanese travelers to the Philippines following the announcement of Philippine President Benigno Aquino III that 2015 is ‘Visit the Philippines Year,'” the statement said. It is part of the “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” tourism campaign in which various themes — including sports adventure and eco-tourism, history and culture, lifestyle and entertainment, and music and the arts — will be highlighted in a series of events.     [FULL  STORY]

While protests triggered by disputes between employers and employees are common in Taiwan, Democratic Progressive Party Chairperson and presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) vowed to come up with policies that would benefit businesses, the public and government once elected.

Tsai yesterday announced on Facebook that she met with electronics manufacturing firm Pegatron’s chairman Tung Tzu-hsien (童子賢) on Tuesday last week and has learned how moves by the government might affect businesses, resulting in her vow to create policies that would accommodate the interests of workers, companies and the state.

“Private businesses feel the impact of government inefficiency deeply,” Tsai said on Facebook. “He [Tung] used system design in the information technology industry as an analogy, proposing that the government could learn what the public is thinking through a good system design, and use a new management system to improve efficiency and have faster reactions to public opinion.”     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan will play a greater role in the global community based on the 1992 Consensus between Taiwan and China.

Speaking at the 10th Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Culture Forum in Shanghai, Chu said he expects Taiwan to perform a bigger role if it can join the China-proposed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the “Belt and Road” initiative and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) trade bloc.

Despite Taiwan’s smaller scale in economy, land and population, Taiwan still holds strengths in innovation, research and development and management experience, allowing it to make substantial contribution to regional economic development through its cooperation with China, Chu said.     [FULL  STORY]

Tree Protection Volunteer Union yesterday called on Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) to adopt a bolder stance in negotiations with Farglory Land Development Co (遠雄建設) about the controversial Taipei Dome project, while reasserting that it would continue its campaign until the project is terminated.

Union director Yu Yi (游藝) yesterday said regarding recent remarks by Ko about the project that the Taipei City Government should give up its “flip-flop” stance and announce a plan to demolish the Taipei Dome.

He said that construction of the structure has fallen seriously behind schedule and caused obvious land subsidence in areas surrounding the construction site — both of which Yu said are evidence of Farglory’s “poor work” and solid points that would help the city government win possible lawsuits filed by Farglory if Ko decides to invalidate the company’s contract.     [FULL  STORY]
