under 71 in the first round Thursday to tie for the 19th place in the Honda LPGA tournament which is taking place at the Siam Country Club in Pattaya and will run through Feb. 28.

The other two Taiwanese players, Candie Kung (龔怡萍) and former World No. 1 Yani Tseng (曾雅妮), shot 72 and 75 on the same day and were tied at 27th and 60th, respectively.

Lexi Thompson of the United States shot two eagles and four birdies in a bogey-free 8-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead over Baek Kyu-jung of South Korea at the 4-day 72-hole tournament, in which 70 of the world’s best players are participating.      [FULL  STORY]

Despite elder sister Chan Yung-jan suffering flu symptoms, the Chan sisters cruised into the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open on Wednesday, while Agnieszka Radwanska avoided the fate of many of the top seeds in the singles by advancing to the last eight.

Fourth seeds Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan took just 51 minutes to dispatch fellow Taiwanese Chan Chin-wei and Katalin Marosi of Hungary 6-2, 6-1 in the second round of the doubles at the International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha.

Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan, who rose to 10th and ninth in this week’s WTA Tour world doubles rankings, saved five of seven break points and converted six of seven, winning 54 of the 78 points contested.     [FULL  STORY]

Bank of Taiwan’s Luke Nevill named Player of Week

Luke Nevill easily won the nods from members of the Basketball Writers’ Association with an outstanding weekend of play last week to land the league’s Player of the Week honor.

The Bank of Taiwan big man, who returned for his second tour of duty at the start of this season after spending his first one with the formerly Taiwan Mobile Leopards two years ago, showed why he is one of the premier centers in the league by netting 23.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game against playoff-contending opponents to lead the Bankers to a pair of sound wins.

“[Nevill] has always shown a willingness to learn our system and work with our players since he first joined us and his continuing improvement is a big reason why we are doing much better now compared to before,” a very happy Bank of Taiwan head coach Hung Chun-che said of his hired gun from Australia earlier this week.     [FULL  STORY]

Volendam, the Netherlands, Feb. 21 (CNA) Taiwan finished with three gold 201602220005t0001and four silver medals at the 2016 World Indoor Tug-of-War Championships in the Netherlands that concluded on Sunday.

On the final day of the four-day competition, Taiwan beat China to win the gold medal in the 600-kg mixed event, after clinching the title in the 560-kg men’s junior event by defeating the Netherlands.

Taiwan also won two silver medals, one in the 600-kg men’s senior event and the other in the 500-kg women’s senior event.

The four medals on Sunday brought Taiwan’s total medal count to seven for the championships.     [FULL  STORY]

The Taiwan team, composed of athletes from Taipei Jingmei Girls High School and National Taiwan Normal University, settled with a silver medal in the tug-of war World Cup, held every two years.

marathon races in Taiwan, and the 2016 Kaohsiung Mizuno International Marathon, which took place in the port city Sunday with the participation of around 30,000 foreign and local runners, was no exception.

Charles Kigen Kimutai won the men’s marathon event by completing the 42.125 kilometer-long race in 2 hours, 16 minutes and 21 seconds. His compatriot, Monica Watetu Ndiritu, took victory in the women’s marathon race with a record of 2:37:15.

Kimutai, runner-up in last year’s race, was pleased to snatch the men’s title, though he did not succeed in shattering the Kaohsiung marathon’s record.     [FULL  STORY]

Bank of Taiwan pulled off a major upset in the Year of the Monkey by stunning second-place d Taiwan Beer in an 80-74 final at the Banciao Gymnasium in New Taipei City last night to force a tie for the fifth-place spot in the standings.

Lee Wei-che and Chen Li-huan made the most of their opportunities to start by downing four points each in the final three minutes of the game to lead the Bankers past a resilient Brew Crew.

The Beermen had rallied from as many as 15 points down in the third quarter to tie the game in the fourth before faltering late in the contest to drop what many had thought to be an easy win for the men in green.     [FULL  STORY]

jung (莊佳容), and her partner Darija Jurak of Croatia won the women’s doubles title at the 2016 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Saturday after defeating the rival pairing in the final of the event with a straight-sets win 6-4 and 6-4.

The Chuang-Jurak pair, a random pairing, won a place to vie for the women’s doubles title with French duo of Kristina Mladenovic and Calorine Garcia, the second seed of the event, after defeating the pairing of Sara Errani from Italy and Carla Suarez Navarro from Spain with 5-7, 7-6 (5) and 10-7 in the semifinals a day earlier.

The French team got a straight-sets win over the pair of Timea Babos from Hungary and Julia Goerges from Germany 6-3 and 6-1 at another match of the semifinals played on Friday.

The championships is a professional tennis tournament organized by Dubai Duty Free and held annually in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on outdoor hardcourts. The inaugural WTA women’s tournament debuted in 2001 as a Premier tournament with a total prize money of US$2 million.   [SOURCE]

beat the Gaztedi team of Basque 2-0 to snatch the 540-kg open club title with 12 strait wins in the 2016 World Indoor Tug-of-War Championships in Volendam, the Netherlands, Thursday.

Since 2010, Jingmei Girls High has won seven gold medals and two silver medals in world tournaments in Italy, Scotland and Ireland. The latest win brings the gold record to eight.

Huang Yun-jing, principal of the school, praised her teamsters for their endurance and perseverance, hoping they will win more medals in the Volendam tourney.     [FULL  STORY]

Brawl at Taipei karate ‘dojo’ injures three: police

After a heated dispute over martial arts on Facebook, rivals from two different schools faced off against each other in a sparring match that turned into a brawl that injured three people at a dojo in Taipei, police said.

At the center of the fighting were 51-year-old karate instructor Chu Hsueh-chang and a 27-year-old male surnamed Tsai.

The Da-an District Police office received an emergency call late on Monday night that a fight had broken out at Chu’s dojo, and officers were dispatched to the scene. When the police arrived outside the dojo, there were more than 10 men and women gathered outside, with some saying that a fight was taking place inside the building.     [FULL  STORY]
