Friday when Chan Chin-wei was ousted by the second seeds in the final doubles quarter-final.

Chan and Darija Jurak of Croatia were beaten 6-3, 7-5 by Spanish duo Anabel Medina Garrigues and Arantxa Parra Santonja in 1 hour, 12 minutes.

The second seeds saved two of four break points and converted four of 12, winning 65 of the 118 points contested to advance to a semi-final against third seeds Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Alicja Rosolska of Poland.

In the quarter-finals of the singles, Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic advanced to the semi-finals, beating Croatia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 6-2, 6-4.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s Chuang ousted in Citi Open quarter-finals

Taiwan’s Chuang Chia-jung was knocked out of the quarter-finals of the doubles at the Citi Open in Washington on Thursday, while reigning US Open champion Marin Cilic edged a tight third-round men’s singles match with Sam Querrey.

Chuang and Liang Chen of China fell to a 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 defeat to Irina Falconi of the US and Monica Niculescu of Romania in 1 hour, 37 minutes in the US capital.

Falconi and Niculescu saved one of three break points and converted two of nine, winning 67 of the 122 points contested to edge the tight contest and advance to a semi-final against third seeds Lara Arruabarrena of Spain and Andreja Klepac of Slovenia.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s Chan Chin-wei advanced to the quarter-finals of the doubles at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California, on Wednesday, while Alison Riske had a change of luck in the singles.

Chan and Darija Jurak of Croatia were 6-4, 7-5 victors over Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia and Anna Tatishvili of the US in the first round of the doubles at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium at Stanford University.

The Taiwanese-Croatian duo saved five of 10 break points and converted seven of 11, winning 69 of the 131 points contested to wrap up the straight-sets victory in 1 hour, 31 minutes.     [FULL  STORY]

The cross-strait duo rallied from 4-1 down in the second set to oust Australian sisters Anastasia and Arina Rodionova 6-4, 7-5 and advance to the quarter-finals.

Chuang and Liang saved three of four break points and converted three of nine, winning 73 of the 138 points contested to stun the second seeds in 1 hour, 26 minutes.

Puerto Rico, representing the Latin American region, beat Taiwan 3-2 in a back-and-forth game.

The Latin American team took an early lead in the first inning, scoring 1 run with a walk and a hit.

Taiwan made it 1-1 in the top of the second with a hit-by-pitch, a walk and an error.

Puerto Rico scored 1 run on a walk and two hits in the fourth inning, while Taiwan made it even in the top of fifth on a walk, a pickoff error and a hit.     [FULL  STORY]

Kobe Bryant coaches young Taiwanese, thanks fans for support

Taipei, Aug. 5 (CNA) Thousands of fans flooded a university sports center in Taipei on 201508050036t0001Wednesday to greet NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, who was there to coach dozens of young Taiwanese players at a summer basketball camp.

Bryant, who was on a one-day visit to Taiwan, was greeted by an arena full of screaming fans when he appeared at National Taiwan University Sports Center to give pointers to around 30 young players on their footwork, agility and ball skills.

Toward the end of the event, Bryant gave four of the players a pair of his new sneakers and then created some drama when he offered to give each of the 30 players a pair of sneakers if one of the four could hit a free throw.

The player who volunteered drew a big ovation when he nailed the shot, and an impressed Bryant gave him a hug and told him: “Good job!”

“I just thank you so much for all the support, for all the inspiration. And I enjoy coming here,” the 36-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star said.

Top seeds Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan, the world No. 32 and No. 22 in doubles respectively, crushed Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm and Mandy Minella of Luxembourg 6-1, 6-3 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium at Stanford University.

The Taiwanese sisters saved five of six break points and converted five of eight, winning 55 of the 90 points contested to wrap up the victory in just 53 minutes.

Lu entered the final round of the British Open tied for the lead at 8-under-par with Jin Young Ko of South Korea, but dropped three shots on the first two holes with a double bogey and bogey and never recovered, held back especially by an uncooperative putter.

The Japan LPGA Tour regular hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation but needed an unusually high 34 putts to get around the course, including a short par putt miss on the par-4 15th that pretty much sealed her fate.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Aug. 2 (CNA) The United States beat Taiwan 7-2 to clinch the World Baseball and 201508020021t0001Softball Confederation (WBSC) 2015 U-12 Baseball World Cup held in Tainan, southern Taiwan Sunday. This was Taiwan’s second consecutive defeat by the U.S. team in the final of event.

Taiwan baseballers took a 2-0 lead in the first two innings, but the taller Americans outbatted Taiwanese in the third by gaining five runs on Taiwanese errors, including a two-run homer by Davis Diaz, for a 5-2 lead.

The U.S. boys widened their lead when Jack Ryan fired a single homer in the top of the fifth inning, consolidating a 6-2 lead.     [FULL  STORY]

Group competition of the World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC) 2015 U-12 Baseball World Cup held in Tainan, southern Taiwan, the host country remains qualified to play in the final of the championship against the United States on Sunday.

Nicaragua took an early lead of 1-0 in the first inning with two hits, adding another run in the third with two hits and an error committed by the Taiwanese side, widening their lead to 2-0.

The Taiwanese nine reinforced their offense in the fifth inning but could only score one run with one walk, one stolen base and a fielder’s choice.

It was the first defeat suffered by Taiwan in this tournament that kicked off on July 24 in Tainan with teams from 12 countries participating.     [FULL  STORY]
