South-east Asian (SEA) Games, Singapore’s national women’s 4x100m relay quartet of Wendy Enn, Shanti Pereira, Dipna Lim-Prasad and Smriti Menon have set a national record of 46.44secs in the event at the Taiwan Open today (May 15).

The result, which was achieved in the heats, betters the previous benchmark of 46.64 set at last month’s Singapore Open.

They finished third in their heat behind Thailand’s Thipat Supawan, Kongthong Wanwisa, Jaksuninkorn Phatsorn and Wannakit Tassaporn (45.42) and Indonesia’s Lusiana Satriani, Tri Setyo Utami, Serafi Anelies Unani, Niadatul Aini (45.88).     [FULL  STORY]

said during his first trip to Taiwan on Friday that he looks forward to sharing his passion for the sport with people in Taiwan.

“I believe you will like Muay Thai once you get to know it,” the 33-year-old said in Taipei ahead of a Muay Thai seminar on May 16 and 17.

In Taiwan at the invitation of the Republic of China Muay Thai Sports Association, which was established last year, Buakaw will demonstrate Muay Thai skills such as punching and kicking, and give instruction to people ranging from beginners to pro fighters.

It was the sincerity of Boris Tsai (蔡伯璽), the association’s vice president, that made the seminar possible, said Buakaw, who won the 2004 and 2006 World MAX category of K-1, a kickboxing platform and martial arts brand.     [FULL  STORY]

Hsieh Su-wei and Flavia Pennetta lost their bid for a first women’s doubles title as a partnership after they were edged 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 by eighth-seeded Russian duo Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in a tight quarter-final at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome yesterday.

The second-seeded Taiwanese-Italian duo got off to a flying start at the Foro Italico, breaking their opponents in the first game when Pavlyuchenkova double-faulted when attempting to save a break point.

Hsieh and Pennetta — who it was revealed last week is engaged to be married to fellow Italian tennis player Fabio Fognini — broke the Russians’ serve again in the seventh game to take a 5-2 lead, but their opponents broke straight back and then closed the gap to 5-4.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, May 13 (CNA) Taiwanese tennis player Lu Yen-hsun (盧彥勳) on 201505130030t0001Wednesday celebrates his 300 win on the ATP Challenger Tour by beating Jarmere Jenkins of the United States 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, to reach the quarterfinals at the Seoul Challenger.

It took 96 minutes for the top-seeded Lu to defeat his 24-year-old unseeded opponent.

For Lu, who is ranked No. 65 in the world, it was his 300th win on the ATP Challenger Tour. He was invited to a celebration at the center court, where event organizers and the South Korean tennis association presented him with a cake.

On Friday, Lu will come up against Wu Di of China, who beat Canadian Philip Bester on Wednesday.

AIBA Women’s Junior and Youth World Championships, which will be hosted by Taiwan for the first time, will be open to the public free of charge.

The bouts will take place May 16-23, with 342 fighters from 44 nations competing for a total of 23 titles, the city’s sport office said at a press conference.

In the youth category, boxers aged 17 to 19 will compete in 10 weight divisions, ranging from 45kg to 81kg and above, while in the junior category fighters aged 15 to 16 will compete in 13 weight divisions, ranging from 44 kg to 80 and above, the office said.     [FULL  STORY]

Sports Federation (FISU) said Wednesday in Taipei that it will not get involved in a controversy over the main local venue for the 2017 Summer Universiade.

The three-member team, led by Summer Universiade Director Marc Vandenplas, said FISU has specialists who can advise the Taipei City government and do their utmost to help the host city organize the games.

However, the FISU will not become entangled in the decision on whether the games’ main venue should be changed from Taipei Dome to Taipei Municipal Stadium, the inspectors said.     [FULL  STORY]

Last-minute try to Taiwan’s Kuo sinks Thailand

Taiwan pulled off a close win against Thailand in their Asia Rugby Championship Division 2 match at the MBPJ Stadium in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Taiwan led 12-9 at halftime through tries to No. 8 Wang Yu-hsiang and inside center Chang Lun-wei.

Thailand had hooker Chawiatt Klongtrujrok yellow carded just before halftime.

Taiwan scored two tries to three in the second half, with flanker Tsai Cheng-hsuan dotting down and Wang adding his second, but Thailand leveled the scores at 24-24 through a try to center Peerapol Chukoun and a conversion to fullback Warongkorn Khamkoet shortly after Taiwan halfback Liu Yao-tang had returned from a stint in the sin-bin.

However, Kuo Wen-ching crossed in the last minute of play to seize the five-point victory.     [FULL  STORY]

After Chan Yung-jan was the victim of a thrilling comeback in her match earlier on Monday, Chan Hao-ching and Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain were outclassed 6-2, 6-3 by Vera Dushevina of Russia and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain.

The Russian-Spanish duo converted five of the six break-point chances they created, while the Taiwanese-Spanish pairing converted just one of two in 1 hour, 10 minutes.

Lin Chih-sheng’s three-run homer in the bottom of the second gave the Primates a 7-2 advantage which the Rhinos managed to reduce to as few as a lone run in the fourth when Chang Chien-ming doubled and scored on Kao Kuo-hui’s RBI single off Lamigo reliever Tseng Meng-cheng to make it 7-6.

That was as close as the Rhinos got as the Monkeys’ bullpen did its job by shutting down the Rhinos offense from the fifth inning with five innings of scoreless relief to give Tseng just his second victory of the season.     [FULL  STORY]

Tokyo, May 10 (CNA) Taiwan’s national team, competing under the name 201505100014t0001Chinese Taipei, won two gold and one bronze medals in the 9th Cheerleading Asia International Open Championships (CAIOC) in Tokyo held Saturday and Sunday.

Chinese Taipei grabbed two golds in the two-person and five-person stunt team categories and one bronze in the high school group category.

The CAIOC is the largest cheerleading championship in Asia and an annual competition hosted by the Japan Cheerleading Association (JCA) in Tokyo, Japan since 2007.     [FULL  STORY]
