Lu Yen-hsun crashes out in Geneva Open first round

Taiwanese No. 1 Lu Yen-hsun failed to make the best of a good start at the Geneva Open, exiting in the first round of the singles on Tuesday.

World No. 64 Lu claimed the first set 6-1 against world No. 40 Lukas Rosol, but the Czech fought back to claim a 1-6, 7-6 (7/1), 7-5 victory in 2 hours, 2 minutes and set up a second-round clash with top seed and world No. 9 Stanislas Wawrinka.

The Taiwanese saved five of eight break-point chances, but only converted four of 13. Lu won 101 of the 196 points contested, but still dropped to 1-2 against the Czech.     [FULL  STORY]

Second seeds Chan Hao-ching and Anabel Medina Garrigues eased into the p20-150521-a1semi-finals of the doubles at the Nuremberg Versicherungscup yesterday, defeating Sandra Klemenschits of Austria and Antonia Lottner of Germany 6-4, 6-1.

The Taiwanese-Spanish duo got off to a flying start by breaking their opponents in the opening game, but were pegged back when Klemenschits and Lottner broke back in the fourth to make it 2-2.

However, Chan and Medina Garrigues broke straight back in the fifth game and then held their serve to win the first set 6-4 in 36 minutes.

The second seeds then broke again in the first and fifth games of the second set, claiming the victory by converting their second match point after 1 hour, 3 minutes on court.     [FULL  STORY]

defeated Veronika Villas of Hungary on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women’s Junior and Youth World Boxing Championships in New Taipei.

Lin, who is seen as one of Taiwan’s best boxers in the championships, won a unanimous 3-0 decision in a match that she dominated from the opening bell.

Throughout the three-round match, Lin proved to be the aggressor, stalking Villas and pinning her against the ropes. Lin threw several effective punches and by the final round, Villas appeared fatigued. The judges unanimously awarded the match to Lin, who is a student at Taipei Municipal YuCheng High School.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, May 19 (CAN) Taiwan boxer Huang Hsiao-wen advanced to the semi-final of the women’s youth division at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women’s Junior and Youth World Boxing Championships in New Taipei City Tuesday.

Joanne, 16, who is originally from Clonroche and is now living in Templeudigan, is part of a 13-strong Irish squad who will be competing against the elite of women boxers from across the world.

A St Michael’s Boxing Club, New Ross, member for many years, Joanne has made history by being the first female Wexford boxer to compete at the games.

Her trainer, Stan Blanche, who is joining her at the games in Taipei, which begin today, said: ‘It’s a massive competition. It’s a junior Olympics with female boxers from 52 countries taking part. Joanne is in good form. Her weight is perfect and she is as sharp as ever.’     [FULL  STORY]

volunteers to serve at the 2017 Summer Universiade in the city, Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) said Saturday.

The sports event will need the support of many volunteers because it is likely to draw 10,000 athletes from different countries, many of whom may not speak English, Ko said at a news conference.

The volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, and some will be expected to have foreign language skills, he said.

They will be assigned to the various competition venues and some will be required to help maintain the traffic arrangements, the mayor said.     [FULL  STORY]

tournament, Tainan broke a deadlock to score five late runs to defeat Yilan County 13-8 yesterday.

Tainan Mayor William Lai attended the game at Taipei’s Hsinsheng Park Baseball Field. Lai brought many supporters from the Tainan area to cheer on the team at the week-long tournament known as the Herbalife Cup, which is for under-12 baseball players from top elementary-school teams chosen to represent their county or city.

This year’s Herbalife Cup series is also to decide coaches for the national squad to compete in the World Baseball Softball Conference (WBSC) U-12 Baseball World Cup Championship, which Tainan is hosting in July.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, May 16 (CNA) The biennial International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women’s Junior and Youth World Boxing Championships opened Saturday in New Taipei City, marking the first time that an international boxing championship is being held in Taiwan.

“This is the first time Taiwan has been selected to host the boxing world championships. We are delighted to host this event and bring the excitement of world-class boxing competition to sport enthusiasts in Taiwan,” Ho Jow-fei (何卓飛), director-general of Taiwan’s Sports Administration, said at the opening ceremony.

AIBA President Wu Ching-kuo (吳經國), who also attended the opening, said boxing is now one of the top Olympic sports thanks to the efforts of AIBA members.     [FULL  STORY]

ninth broke a 1-all tie for the Lamigo Monkeys as they held on to defeat the Chinatrust Brothers 2-1 at the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium last night to even the weekend series at one win apiece.

It was only the second long ball that the speedy outfielder has driven out of the ball park, but it could not have come at a better time, as the visitors had missed several golden scoring opportunities in the previous innings to allow the Brothers in the game.

“I guessed a fastball all the way and that was what [Chen] threw me,” Chan said after the game.
