Chan Hao-ching on Wednesday came out on top of a Taiwanese “showdown of sisters” in the mixed doubles semi-finals at the US Open, ending elder sister Latisha’s bid for a third straight Grand Slam title at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Top seeds Chan Hao-ching and Michael Venus edged fourth seeds Latisha Chan and Ivan Dodig 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 in 1 hour, 32 minutes in the final match of the day at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

The Taiwanese-New Zealand duo saved three of four break points and converted two of four, while firing 11 aces and taking advantage of their opponents’ seven double faults and 26 unforced errors to advance to their second final in three years in New York.

Latisha Chan and Croatian Dodig were looking to claim their third straight mixed doubles Grand Slam title after victories at the French Open in June and Wimbledon in July, but it will be Chan Hao-ching and Venus who will be looking to go one better than their loss in the 2017 final to Swiss-British duo Martina Hingis and Jamie Murray.    [FULL  STORY]

NBA basketball players Danny Green and Terry Rozier took hundreds of Taiwanese basketball fans back to school by showing them how to shoot and dribble at a fan meet and greet session outside the iconic Taipei 101 building in Taiwan's capital on Tuesday.

About 500 basketball fans, including former players from Taiwan's University Basketball Association, singers and celebrities, gathered at the event titled "Puma Hoop."

"Everybody thinks shooting is arm-based, but you got to use your legs, that's where the trick is," said Green, who signed to the Los Angeles Lakers last month after winning his second NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors earlier this year.

Shooting is about consistency and a basketball player should aim to shoot the ball the same way every time, he said, adding that balance is very important and located in the lower part of the body.

Taiwan coach hopes to stoke passion

TOUGH PITCH: To promote soccer and inspire kids, Louis Lancaster developed an aggressive playing style that is more capable of giving the players big moments

The head coach of Taiwan’s national soccer team on Tuesday told of his plans to generate passion for soccer among Taiwanese by developing an aggressive and more exciting style of play.

“If you look at Taiwan, we’re meant to be the nicest people in the world, we’re so friendly, we will help anyone, but actually, now that’s changed because when we get on the pitch, we’re animals,” Louis Lancaster said.

The team’s new style of play emphasizes keeping the ball as close to the opposition’s goal as possible, said Lancaster, who took over as head coach on Jan. 16, after serving as assistant to former head coach Gary White from Sept. 14, 2017, to Sept. 8 last year.

“To do that, players cannot turn down forward passing opportunities,” he said. “In our possession, we have to be fast-paced and aggressive, and we have to suffocate the other team in their half of the field.”    [FULL  STORY]
