Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei yesterday crashed out of the second round of the singles at the Pan Pacific Open, then teamed up with younger sister Hsieh Yu-chieh to advance to the quarter-finals of the doubles.

Despite a spirited second-set fightback, the Taiwanese No. 1 fell to a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 defeat to Belgian ninth seed Elise Mertens in 1 hour, 53 minutes in Osaka, Japan.

World No. 33 Hsieh Su-wei converted six of 10 break points, four in the second set, but saved only five of 12 as she failed to take advantage of her opponent’s six double faults.

The victory improved the Belgian world No. 24’s career record over Hsieh to 2-1 and saw her advance to a quarter-final against the winner of today’s second-round clash between Sloane Stephens of the US and Italy’s Camila Giorgi.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s Hsieh ousts Muguruza

PAN PACIFIC OPEN: ‘In the second set, I felt a little bit more rhythm and more stable myself, my personal style,’ Hsieh Su-wei said. ‘It helped me a lot to get into the match’

Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei yesterday battled back from a set down and saved a match point as she ousted former world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza to advance to the second round of the singles at the Pan Pacific Open, while the Chan sisters cruised into the quarter-finals of the doubles in Osaka, Japan.

World No. 33 Hsieh defeated the Spaniard — who topped the women’s rankings in September 2017, but has since fallen to No. 26 — 3-6, 7-6 (7/1), 6-1 in 2 hours, 1 minute to improve her career record over the two-time Grand Slam champion to 2-0 after a straight-sets victory at last year’s Australian Open.

“I know that anything can happen because this is almost the end of the year,” Hsieh told the WTA Web site. “I just want to be more relaxed, going more to my game. Sometimes I lose a little bit of rhythm at the beginning, so I just need to play more games to get the rhythm.”

The Taiwanese saved six of 12 break points and converted six of 11, her six fewer unforced errors making up for the eight double faults she produced against the Spaniard, who has not won a match since beating Elina Svitolina in the third round of the French Open in June.6    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei yesterday had to dig deep to maintain her defense of the Japan Women’s Open title, as Australian Priscilla Hon served for the match three times before the top seed eventually prevailed to book her place in the quarter-finals in Hiroshima.

World No. 29 Hsieh was made to battle for a second day, this time falling a set behind to the world No. 123, before fighting back to edge the match 1-6, 7-6 (7/2), 7-5 in 2 hours, 10 minutes.

The 33-year-old Taiwanese was well off the pace in the first set, failing to create a single break point as the 21-year-old Australian converted two of four to take control of the match.

“In the first set, [Hon] was hitting so well and I had no rhythm,” Hsieh told the WTA Web site.

After Thursday's 2-1 defeat to Jordan on home territory, the Taiwanese were thirsty for revenge and made repeated attacks led by forward Chen Hao-wei (陳浩瑋) on the Nepalese side.

However, Taiwan started showing signs of distress from early on in the match when midfielder Anjan Bista of Nepal scored the first goal just three minutes into the match.
