Cleveland Indians infield prospect filling in for injured third baseman Jose Ramirez, who broke his hand last month, was upstaged by a local boy coming home.

Chants of “Let’s go, Bieber” rolled out of the Angel Stadium stands before Shane Bieber had even thrown a pitch. The raucous cheers continued all night long and they culminated in that rarest of baseball honors: a curtain call for a visiting player.

Although the Indians were on the road, Bieber was at home — and the kid from Laguna Hills definitely pitched like it.

Bieber threw seven stellar innings of five-hit ball in his first career start at his hometown stadium, while rookie Chang hit his first major league homer in the Indians’ 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.    [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A “lucky hat” that name checks a Taiwan temple has gone viral after its wearer, Norwegian athlete Gustav Iden, won a triathlon event in France, Central News Agency (CNA) reported on Monday (Sept. 9).

Iden won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France, in 3 hours, 52 minutes and 35 seconds. As he was sprinting towards the finish line, sharp-eyed Taiwanese noticed the hat he wore bore the legend: "Puyan Shunze Temple" (埔鹽順澤宮).

The 300-year-old temple in Puyan Township (埔鹽鄉), Changhua County (彰化縣), honors the god Hsuan Tien Shang Ti. It has a mud statue of the god from when the temple was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1948, the Puyan Township Office website confirms.

According to the CNA report, Iden noticed the hat lying on the ground when he took part in an Ironman competition in Tokyo. He picked it up, and took good care of it in the hope it would bring him luck – which it did, as he won the event in Nice, France.    [FULL  STORY]

Chan Hao-ching on Wednesday came out on top of a Taiwanese “showdown of sisters” in the mixed doubles semi-finals at the US Open, ending elder sister Latisha’s bid for a third straight Grand Slam title at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Top seeds Chan Hao-ching and Michael Venus edged fourth seeds Latisha Chan and Ivan Dodig 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 in 1 hour, 32 minutes in the final match of the day at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

The Taiwanese-New Zealand duo saved three of four break points and converted two of four, while firing 11 aces and taking advantage of their opponents’ seven double faults and 26 unforced errors to advance to their second final in three years in New York.

Latisha Chan and Croatian Dodig were looking to claim their third straight mixed doubles Grand Slam title after victories at the French Open in June and Wimbledon in July, but it will be Chan Hao-ching and Venus who will be looking to go one better than their loss in the 2017 final to Swiss-British duo Martina Hingis and Jamie Murray.    [FULL  STORY]
