Ironman Gustav Iden won his event in France but received international attention for his hat, which name checked a Taiwan temple

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A “lucky hat” that name checks a Taiwan temple has gone viral after its wearer, Norwegian athlete Gustav Iden, won a triathlon event in France, Central News Agency (CNA) reported on Monday (Sept. 9).

Iden won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France, in 3 hours, 52 minutes and 35 seconds. As he was sprinting towards the finish line, sharp-eyed Taiwanese noticed the hat he wore bore the legend: "Puyan Shunze Temple" (埔鹽順澤宮).

The 300-year-old temple in Puyan Township (埔鹽鄉), Changhua County (彰化縣), honors the god Hsuan Tien Shang Ti. It has a mud statue of the god from when the temple was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1948, the Puyan Township Office website confirms.

According to the CNA report, Iden noticed the hat lying on the ground when he took part in an Ironman competition in Tokyo. He picked it up, and took good care of it in the hope it would bring him luck – which it did, as he won the event in Nice, France.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Sept. 9 (CNA) Taiwanese athletes succumbed Sunday to South Africa to take the silver medal at the 2019 World U23 and Junior Outdoor Tug Of War Championships held in Ireland.

The tournament consisted of two events — the Outdoor Open Club Championships and the World Championships — both of which took place at Castlebar in the west of Ireland Sept. 5-8.

The tug of war team, comprised of students from Taoyuan Municipal Shou Shan Senior High School and Taipei Jingmei Girls High School, took silver in the junior mixed 520-kilogram category.

Huang Yung-wang (黃永旺), vice chairman of the Chinese Taipei Tug of War Association, said the team could have won gold if some of its main players had not been out on the injured list.

Taipei, Sept. 7 (CNA) Taiwanese archer Tan Ya-ting (譚雅婷) won a silver medal in an archery world

cup final in Russia on Saturday, after losing 4-6 to her South Korean opponent in the women's recurve event.

Tan was defeated by Kang Chae Young, who completed the event 29-29, 25-28, 30-27, 30-29, and 28-28.

Each set consists of three arrows per archer, with the winner getting two points for the set, while it is one point each for a tie. The first person to six wins.

This year, the 26-year old Taiwanese has won three bronze medals in the women's individual recurve event at world cup archery events in Shanghai, Antalya in Turkey and Berlin.6    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s Chou Tien-chen returns to Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia in their Yonex Chinese

Taiwan’s world No. 2 Chou Tien-chen yesterday advanced to the finals of the Yonex Chinese Taipei Open after winning his men’s singles semi-final.

The top seed was made to fight for the win by Indonesian world No. 34 Shesar Hiren Rhustavito, but managed to secure a 23-25, 21-10, 21-13 victory in 1 hour, 9 minutes.

In the thrilling first game, Rhustavito started impressively with three consecutive points and held a 8-11 lead before the players switched sides.

Although Chou got back into the game, he was eventually edged out 25-23 in the tiebreaker.

The home crowd urged Chou to an early 11-5 lead in the second game, then after a water break the Taiwanese extended the gap to win 21-10.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Sept. 6 (CNA) Taiwan overwhelmed Australia 12-0 Friday in a super round game at the U-18 Baseball World Cup to advance to the semifinals in South Korea.

The Taiwanese players were quick to open the scoreboard at the top of the second, loading the bases with consecutive hits by Lin Chen-hsun (林辰勳), Wang Shun-ho (王順和) and Yueh Cheng-hua (岳政華).

Starting pitcher Lin Yu-min (林吳晉) then batted a base hit to bring two runners home, giving Taiwan a 2-0 lead.

The event is said to be the only sea swim in Taiwan that starts and ends in different places

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The 3,200 meter Waimushan sea swim (外木山海上長泳) will take place in Keelung City (基隆市) at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday (May 26), United Daily reported.

Participants will start the swim from Waimushan fishing port (外木山漁港), swim westward along Waimushan coast, and finish at Dawulun Aodi Beach (大武崙澳底沙灘). The report added the Waimushan event is the only sea swim in Taiwan that starts and ends in different places.

This means swimmers will experience different coastal landscapes during the entire swim. They will also be able to see colorful tropical fish and globefish on the reefs along the route, the report said.

The water off Waimushan coast won first place in a vote to find Taiwan’s "top 10 charming waters," held by the Sports Department of the Ministry of Education, in 2015.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Sept. 5 (CNA) Taiwan's national football team suffered a defeat on Thursday in its first game in the second round of qualifiers for the 2022 world cup.

Taiwan lost to Jordan 2-1 at Taipei Stadium in the first of a series of matches to be played to qualify for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The home crowd cheered and roared every time Taiwan took the ball to the other side of the pitch, but the team were shut out by tight Jordanian defensive play in the first half.

Jordan's first goal was scored by forward Baha Faisal Seif 18 minutes into the match, followed by another at 36 minutes from forward Ahmad Sameer Saleh.    [FULL  STORY]
