Hsieh Su-wei cruises past Polona Hercog

Taiwanese No. 1 Hsieh Su-wei yesterday began her season with a comfortable straight-sets victory at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, while the ageless Venus Williams launched her 25th year as a professional by outlasting Victoria Azarenka in a three-set thriller.

Hsieh, who began the season as the world No. 28 after claiming her third title in Hiroshima, Japan, in September, her first since 2012, cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over world No. 85 Polona Hercog in 63 minutes.

The Taiwanese third seed saved three of four break points and converted four of eight, winning 58 of the 100 points contested to improve her career record over the Slovenian to 3-2.

Hsieh next faces reigning Olympic champion and world No. 53 Monica Puig of Puerto Rico in the second round today, against whom she has a 0-2 career record.

Michael Look of Australia on Monday to qualify for the main draw of an ATP Challenger event in Australia.

The 17-year-old Taiwanese, who is the top ranked junior in the world but is turning pro this year, cruised past Look 6-1, 6-4 in the US$81,240 2019 City of Playford Tennis International.

He will play another Australian opponent, Aleksandar Vukic, in the opening round of the main singles draw on Tuesday.

Tseng has had a stellar year in 2018, winning back-to-back junior Grand Slam singles titles at the French Open and Wimbledon and reaching the junior finals of the Australian Open and junior semifinals of the US Open, results that led him to turn pro.    [FULL  STORY]

the women’s doubles at the Brisbane International, while Karolina Pliskova rallied from a set down to advance to the second round of the women’s singles.

Taiwanese sisters Chan Hao-ching and Latisha Chan took just 49 minutes to complete a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Japanese duo Miyu Kato and Makoto Ninomiya in their opening match of the season.

The fourth seeds saved one of the two break points they faced and converted five of 10, winning 55 of the 88 points contested to advance to a quarter-final against either Dutch duo Kiki Bertens and Demi Schuurs or Kristina Mladenovic of France and Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan, who are due to face off today.

to the status of the best of the best in Japan’s professional baseball history, according to a Liberty Times report on Tuesday.

On Monday night, Japan’s TV Asahi broadcast the results of an “overall professional baseball election” with votes casted by 10,000 fans. The fans selected the 30 best players in Japan’s professional baseball history, and the No. 1 player is Wang, who had set a world record by hitting 868 home runs.

Wang’s parents went to Japan to be in business, and Wang has three siblings. Wang began playing baseball when he was in the third or fourth grade. While in high school, Wang became a member of the school’s baseball team. After graduating from high school, he became a professional player in 1959, which was the inception of his brilliant 21-year professional baseball career in Japan.    [FULL  STORY]

The Lu brothers, who received support from Taiwanese compatriots in the audience, defeated the Phillip Chew and Ryan Chew from the U.S. in straight sets 21-18, 21-10.

“This is the biggest surprise just before Christmas,” Lu Chia-pin said after the event, with the brothers’ parents traveling overseas to watch them compete for the first time.

gold medals Friday at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) 5th International Qatar Cup, a qualifying competition for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Kuo, 25, won a gold medal with a snatch lift of 103 kilograms in the women’s 59 kg division, a second gold with a clean and jerk of 130 kg. and a final gold for the combined lift of 233 kg.

It was the first time she had won both the snatch and clean and jerk lifts in any competition.

Kuo said the second half of this year has been difficult for her because of her intense training regimen prior to the Qatar Cup in Doha, and she thanked her coach for his encouragement and moral support at the event.    [FULL  STORY]

Jeremy Lin leads Hawks to 118-110 win over Wizards

Hawks expected John Wall’s inevitable scoring burst that came in the third quarter on Tuesday night. Lin had an even stronger response in the fourth.

The veteran guard scored 12 of his 16 points in the final period as the Hawks overcame Bradley Beal’s 29 points for a 118-110 victory over the Washington Wizards.

The Hawks outscored the Wizards 71-52 in the first and fourth quarters combined.

“I thought it was one of our best defensive games,” Lin said. “That gives you a chance.”

Wall, scoreless as Washington trailed throughout the first half, had 10 points in the third period as the Wizards pulled even at 82 entering the fourth.
