Taipei, Sept. 29 (CNA) Taiwan’s Cheng I-ching (鄭怡靜) topped Doo Hoi-kem of Hong

K0ong 4-2 Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the 2018 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Women’s World Cup in Chengdu, China.

The fourth-seeded Cheng came from behind to beat the world No. 11 Doo 8-11, 9-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-3 at the Sichuan Province Gymnasium.

Prior to her quarterfinal match, Cheng beat Georgina Pota of Hungary 11-6, 11-8, 20-18, 13-11 in the Round of 16, which was also played that same day.

Chu Ming-chuan won the 5000m open water swim by a mere 0.08 seconds

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – 61 year old Taiwanese man Chu Ming-chuan (朱明0全) won the men’s 5000m open water swim during the “2018 Most Beautiful Bay Carnival” by the minute margin of 0.08 seconds in Penghu County (澎湖縣) on Sept. 23, reported CNA.

Chu, a Penghu native, won the men’s title, while Liao Wan-hui (廖婉惠) from Keelung City (基隆市) won the women’s title.

The swimming race was put on during the Most Beautiful Bay Carnival, which convenes with the 14th World Congress of the Most Beautiful Bays, a congress that aims to protect the ecology and natural heritage of bays worldwide.

The Most Beautiful Bays Club was established in 1997, and Penghu County became a member in 2012. The club currently has 41 members.

Taipei, Sept. 24 (CNA) Taiwanese tennis player Chan Hao-ching (詹皓晴)

and her Chinese partner Yang Zhaoxuan (楊釗煊) were knocked out of the women’s doubles in the first round at the 2018 Wuhan Open in China on Monday.

Chan and Yang, ranked 27th and 23rd worldwide, respectively, lost to world No. 18 Nicole Melichar of the United States and world No. 13 Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 5-10 in a nail- biting game that lasted 105 minutes.

In the first set, Chan and Yang warmed up quickly to secure a 4-2 lead, but their defenses were worn down by Melichar and Peschke, who tied the score 6-6.

Melichar and Peschke won the tiebreaker 7-4 to take the first set.

Taipei, Sept. 22 (CNA) Taiwanese athletes snagged another gold medal at the 2018

TWIF World Outdoor Championships in South Africa on Saturday, giving Taiwan six gold medals at this year’s championships with other events still being contested.

The tug-of-war team from Taipei Jingmei Girls High School and National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) defeated the host country to win the women’s U23-500 kilogram title.

The biennial Tug of War World Championships, being held from Sept. 19 to 22, featured Open Club Championships in the first two days, with clubs from around the world eligible to participate. The official World Championships were being held Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, another team consisting of students from Jingmei Girls High School and NTNU won a gold medal in the women’s 500-kilogram tug-of-war event after defeating Switzerland 2-0 in the finals.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Sept. 21 (CNA) Taiwanese athletes snagged a gold medal at the 2018 TWIF

World Outdoor Championships in South Africa on Thursday, their fourth since the international biennial tournament opened Wednesday.

The tug-of-war team from Taipei Jingmei Girls High School and National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) defeated Basque Country to win the the women’s 540 kilogram title.

Prior to Thursday’s competition, Taiwan had also snatched gold medals in the U23-560kg mixed category, the U23-500kg female category, and the junior girls’ 480-kilogram class tournament.

The Tug of War World Championships, which are being held Sept. 19-22, features Open Clubs Championships in the first two days, with clubs from around the world eligible to participate. The official World Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Taipei, Sept. 21 (CNA) Taiwanese badminton player Chou Tien-chen (周天成) advanced

to the semifinals of the men’s singles at the 2018 China Open after defeating Son Wan-ho of South Korea 21-17, 21-14 in straight games Friday.

In a match that lasted 39 minutes, Chou, ranked fifth in the world, was the first to settle, going on a run of six consecutive points during the first game, which he won 21-17.

In the second game, Chou stepped up the pressure on Son, ranked number seven in the world, taking another six consecutive points and winning the game 21-14.

Chou now faces Indonesian Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, ranked 13th in the world, in the semifinals.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwanese badminton player Chou Tien-chen advanced to the final eight of the men’s

singles at the 2018 China Open on Thursday.

Chou beat Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand in a match that only lasted 27 minutes and ended 21-14, 21-11 in straight sets. Chou defeated the same opponent at the 2018 Jakarta Palembang Asian Games in August.

Meanwhile, the world’s number one player Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan was upset by unseeded Gao Fangjie of China in the women’s singles on Wednesday. Chou and the men’s doubles team Chen Hung-ling and Wang Chi-lin are the only Taiwanese still in competition.

The China Open offers prize money of US$1 million. The competition is one of the BWF World Tour Super 1,000 events.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Sept. 20 (CNA) Taiwan has so far won three gold medals at the Tug of War World

Championships, which is being held in Cape Town, South Africa, until Saturday.

The Tug of War World Championships 2018 consist of two events — Outdoor Club Championships and World Championships, both of which are taking place at the city’s Camps Bay High School.

National Nantou Senior High School team, which competed in the club championship event, took the first gold for Taiwan by beating host country South Africa in the junior girls’ 480-kilogram class tournament Wednesday morning.

Taiwan took its second gold medal in the junior mixed 560-kg class tournament the same day.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwanese No. 1 Hsieh Su-wei survived a scare to advance to the second round of the

singles at the Korea Open in Seoul yesterday, before teaming up with younger sister Hsieh Shu-ying to advance to the quarter-finals of the doubles.

Hsieh, who claimed her third career singles title at the Japan Women’s Open in Hiroshima on Sunday, had to fight back from a set down to overcome Swiss qualifier Jil Teichmann 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/0) in 2 hours, 12 minutes.

The Taiwanese sixth seed, who rose to No. 29 in the world rankings following her victory in Japan, saved 13 of 16 break points and converted three of nine, winning 110 of the 209 points contested to advance to a second-round clash with another Swiss, Stefanie Voegele, who ousted South Korean wild-card Choi Jee-hi 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 on Monday.

Hsieh then returned to the hard courts alongside her sister in the first round of the doubles as they took 74 minutes to defeat Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek 6-4, 6-4.    [FULL  STORY]
