Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying reaches semi-finals at Indonesia Open

Taipei, July 6 (CNA) World No. 1 Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) got the better of Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour to move into the semifinals of the women’s singles of BLIBLI Indonesia Open 2018 in Jakarta on Friday.

Tai comfortably defeated the world No. 28 Gilmour 21-16, 21-11 in 31 minutes.

She will next play 8th-seeded He Bingjiao of China, who defeated third-seeded Pusarla V. Sindhu 21-14, 21-15 on Friday.

The Indonesia Open, which has prize money of US$1.25 million, is an HSBC BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament, one of only three Super 1000 level tournaments this year. The other two are the China Open and the All England.    [FULL  STORY]

singles at Wimbledon, while Taiwanese sisters Latisha Chan and Chan Hao-ching cruised into the second round of the women’s doubles at the All England Club in London.

World No. 48 Hsieh took just 65 minutes to complete a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Spanish world No. 88 Lara Arruabarrena on Court 17.

The 32-year-old saved two of five break points and converted six of nine, winning 65 of the 111 points contested to set up a third-round clash with Romanian world No. 1 and top seed Simona Halep.

In the first round of the women’s doubles, fifth seeds Latisha Chan and Peng Shuai defeated Raluca Olaru of Romania and Wang Yafan of China 7-5, 6-3 in 1 hour, 37 minutes on Court 6.    [FULL  STORY]

Juggernaut Taiwan beat Guam 6-0 in the semifinals of the 2018 Little League Baseball Asia Pacific and Middle East Regionals in South Korea on Thursday.

Taiwan made one run in each of the first, second, fifth innings and three runs in the sixth inning, while denying Guam the opportunity to step back onto the home plate.

Throughout the six innings, Taiwanese pitcher Lin Wei-en nearly created a no-hitter, as Guam got away with only one hit, and he also finished the game with 10 strikeouts.

The team, which hails from Guishan Elementary School in Taoyuan, is competing in Pool B and has been on a winning streak since the tournament started June 30. Juggernaut Taiwan defeated New Zealand 10-0 on the first day then went on to rout Hong Kong (19-5), Thailand (23-0) and the Philippines (27-0) on each of the following days.   [FULL  STORY]

Taiwanese hurdlist, age 15, wins place in 2018 Youth Olympic Games

Taipei, July 5 (CNA) Fifteen-year-old Yang Jui-hsuan (楊睿萱) of Taiwan won a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Youth Olympic Qualifying Meet in Thailand on Thursday, which qualified her for the Games that will be held later this year.

Yang, who turns 16 on Oct. 24, finished first in the women’s 400-meter hurdles in a time of 59.78 seconds.

With Yang’s win, Taiwan has secured 10 places in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, which are scheduled for Oct. 6-18 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Yang’s coach Lin Chin-fu (林進福) said, however, that there are still some flaws in the athlete’s performance that need to be fixed before then.     [SOURCE]

doubles at the All England Club, while Caroline Wozniacki suffered fresh Wimbledon woe as the world No. 2 suffered a shock 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 defeat to Ekaterina Makarova in the second round of the singles before telling the Russian: “You won’t go far.”

Hsieh and Lucie Hradecka took just 63 minutes to complete a 6-3, 6-3 victory over British duo Katie Boulter and Katie Swan.

The 14th seeds saved four of five break points and converted four of six, winning 67 of the 107 points contested.

The Taiwanese-Czech duo next face a second-round clash with either Veronika Kudermetova of Russia and Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka, who Hsieh partnered in Eastbourne last week, or Danielle Collins of the US and Jessica Moore of Australia.

Yang Chuan-kwang’s Olympic medal donated to sports training center

Kaohsiung, July 4 (CNA) The son of late Taiwanese decathlete legend Yang Chuan-kwang (楊傳廣) on Wednesday donated his father’s 1960 Olympic silver medal to the National Sports Training Center (NSTC).

Yang was the first Taiwanese athlete to win an Olympic medal, NSTC Chief Executive Officer Li Wen-bin (李文彬) said at a formal donation ceremony.

He said the silver decathlon medal will be placed in the center’s hall of fame.

With just over 40 days to go before the start of the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, the medal will serve as great encouragement and motivation to Taiwanese athletes preparing for the games, Li said.    [FULL  STORY]

In the 2018 FIFA World Cup held in Russia, jerseys of the Brazil, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, England, Japan, and Egypt teams are made of Taiwan’s innovative fabrics, coming from five Taiwanese textile giants – Far Eastern New Century, ShinKong Synthetic Fibers, Fu Hsun Fibers, Men-Chuen Fibre, and New Wide Enterprise, according to Chinese-language CommonWealth magazine.

The magazine reported that the five are known for manufacturing excellent sweat-management fabrics or seamless knitting technology, which can keep wearers feeling cool and comfortable. TAIPEI (Taiwan News)—Taiwan’s Little League Baseball (LLB) team finished China with a

score of 15-0 after just four innings in the third game it played in the Asia-Pacific regional competition currently taking place in Manila, Philippines, moving closer to representing the region in the World Series, according to media reports.

The Taiwan LLB team, which is made up of players from Taoyuan Hsin Ming Junior High School, has racked up the best record in the regional competition with three wins and no losses after beating Hong Kong (22-0), the Philippines (10-0) and China with overwhelming victories.

The Taiwan team will play against the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) at 10 a.m., Taiwan time, aiming to win the right to represent the Asia-Pacific region in the World Series.

Taiwan has won the championship of the LLB World Series five consecutive times and is seeking the sixth championship. The Hsin Ming Junior High School team is seeking its third consecutive LLB World Series championship.    [SOURCE]

Singapore, June 30 (CNA) World No. 1 Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) reached the final of the women’s singles at the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2018 after beating Indian Pusarla V. Sindhu 21-15, 19-21, 21-11 in the semifinals Saturday.

The top-seeded Tai won the opening game without facing a serious challenge though she took a while to warm up at the beginning of the match. She lost the second game to Sindhu 19-21 after making errors at crucial moments.

The 24-year-old defending champion stepped up the pressure at the beginning of the third game and ran away with the match.    [FULL  STORY]
