Completing their three-game tour in India with a defeat to Kenya, the Taiwan men’s soccer team returned home yesterday, as officials announced an international friendly with Malaysia on Sept. 7.

Taiwan’s participation in the Hero Intercontinental Cup in Mumbai, India, last week concluded when they were trounced by Kenya 4-0 on Friday.

India suffered a surprising home defeat on Thursday when New Zealand beat them 2-1.

The All Whites made a fine accounting of themselves in group-level play with two wins and one loss — the same record as the hosts and Kenya.    [FULL  STORY]

(戴資穎) graduated from the University of Taipei’s Institute of Sports Training Saturday with special awards from the mayor and for her contributions.

Tai, who turns 24 later this month, said it was “quite cool” to be wearing the graduation toga and square cap for the first time, the Central News Agency reported. She has been admitted to continue at the college for Ph.D. courses, which she hope will make her even better.

Tai has ranked No.1 on the women’s singles list since December 2016, but it was her performance at last summer’s Universiade in Taipei which cemented her popularity with the public in her home country. She won gold medals at the event, for which she had stayed away from the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

At Saturday’s graduation, she received applause from her fellow students and praise from university officials for her self-discipline, potential and social skills, CNA reported.    [SOURCE]

seven tips on life with graduates of Taiwan’s National Chengchi University (NCCU) in Taipei Saturday.

Lin, who was invited to give a talk at NCCU’s graduation ceremony, said that although he missed his own graduation ceremony at Harvard University in 2010, his life experiences might be of help to Taiwan’s fresh graduates.

His first tip is to stay away from comfort zones, as suffering and trauma in life are the best drivers for a person to move forward.

“To be a great person, you have to be a little crazy,” according to Lin. He said that being “normal” will not make a person extraordinary. He encouraged his audience not to fear failure and to embrace life’s challenges.    [FULL  STORY]

top-seeded Sebastian Baez of Brazil 7-6 (7/5), 6-2.

The 16-year-old Tseng, who beat Australian Open champion Sebastian Korda of the US in the semi-finals, came back from a break down in the first set to claim his first Grand Slam title.

“Today I was playing really well on the baseline and solid,” the fourth-seeded Tseng said. “I think the first set I was a little bit tight in the beginning, and after I just enjoyed and relaxed.”

However, Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and her partner, Yang Zhaoxuan of China, did not fare so well, falling just short of the women’s doubles final on Friday after losing to Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya of Japan 6-2, 6-2.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, June 4 (CNA) Taiwanese weightlifter Hsu Shu-ching (許淑淨), who announced her retirement from competitive weightlifting on Sunday, said a day later that painful injuries forced her to make the decision.

At a press conference Monday, Hsu said she has been troubled by an old knee injury ever since the 2012 Olympics in London and was struggling with a new elbow injury that she sustained after the World Weightlifting Championship in Anaheim, California, last year.

The pain had become so excruciating that she could barely lift any weight for the past week, Hsu said, and doctors told her therapy for the injury would take at least a year.
