OSAKA(Taiwan News)- Taiwanese athlete Chen Kuei-ru (陳奎儒) breaks the national record set in the National Intercollegiate Athletics Games, clocking in a new timing of 13.49s in the Seiko Golden Grand Prix Osaka 2018.

According to the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association, Chen was initially not the one representing Taiwan for the 110m Hurdles event. He replaced Yang Wei-ting(楊尉廷) for the competition. Chen started very smoothly at the beginning of the race, leading all the way and successfully bag in the gold medal in the Seiko Golden Grand Prix Osaka 2018 held in Nagai Stadium.

Taiwan grabs silver in 7th Asian Junior Women’s Softball Championship

Women’s Softball Championship, which concluded in the Philippines on Friday.

The team lost 0-4 to their Japanese opponents in the final playoff of the six-day tournament, which was held at the Villages Softball Field in Clark, Pampanga, Philippines, this week.

Head coach Tseng Hsin-chang (曾信彰) told CNA after the match that he was satisfied with the team’s overall performance, especially in an earlier game against China, whom they defeated 4-2 to reach the final on Friday.
Tseng said his players possess the skills, but still fell behind the Japanese in terms of the concept of batting, pitching and defensive play.

Taiwan’s team members were drafted from five different schools, including National Puli Industrial Vocational Senior High School in Nantou County and Shilin High School of Commerce in Taipei.    [FULL  STORY]

Jeffrey Koo, Jr. voted new chairman of baseball association

Taipei, May 19 (CNA) Jeffrey Koo, Jr. (辜仲諒), a major shareholder of CTBC Financial Holdings, was elected Saturday as the new chairman of the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA).

Koo won 1,025 votes out of the 1,138 ballots cast by association members, becoming the 12th chairman of the baseball association since its founding in 1973.

He will replace incumbent CTBA Chairman Liao Cheng-ching (廖正井) in July.

The chairman-elect is currently the owner of the ChinaTrust Brothers, one of four team in Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL). The other three are the Uni-President Lions, Lamigo Monkeys, and Fubon Guardians.   [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, May 18 (CNA) The chances that Taiwan will be allowed to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics under its own name instead of “Chinese Taipei” are very low, Wu Ching-kuo (吳經國), an executive board member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said on Friday.

World No. 50 Hsieh fell to a 6-0, 6-4 defeat to Johanna Konta in the second round of the women’s singles as the British world No. 22 improved her career record over the Kaohsiung-born 32-year-old to 3-2.

Konta saved both break points she faced and converted six of 11 to advance to a third-round match against Latvian fifth seed Jelena Ostapenko.

while Russian star Maria Sharapova giggled with delight as she revealed how she plucked up the courage to pop the question and got to practice with Rafael Nadal on the clay courts in Rome.

Qualifier Hsieh had to wait for the rain to ease before cruising past Belarussian world No. 45 Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-4 in 1 hour, 22 minutes.

The Kaohsiung-born world No. 50 saved one of three break points and converted five of seven, winning 64 of 118 points to advance to a second-round clash with British world No. 22 Johanna Konta.

Younger sister Chan Hao-ching and Yang Zhaoxuan advanced to the second round of the women’s doubles with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Japanese duo Shuko Aoyama and Miyu Kato in 1 hour, 14 minutes at the Foro Italico.

The Taiwanese-Chinese duo saved five of eight break points and converted five of nine, winning 62 of the 115 points contested to advance to a tough second-round clash against Czech second seeds Andrea Sestini Hlavackova and Barbora Strycova.

pitcher Chien-Ming Wang’s (王建民) professional baseball career premiered Saturday at the 36th CAAMFest, the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.

During the premiere of the documentary “Late Life: The Chien-ming Wang Story” in San Francisco, some basketball fans wore the former New York Yankees pitcher’s jerseys or those labeled with “Chinese Taipei” to express their support for Wang.

“I hope that the story about me would encourage people to chase after their dreams bravely and not to give up easily,” Wang told his fans, who flew in from several places in America, at the fan meeting held after the screening of the film.

Taiwanese-Canadian filmmaker Frank W. Chen (陳惟揚), director of the documentary, said that the film gave an inside look at how Wang refused to let his setback stop him from pitching and what he had been through that led him to return to Major League Baseball.    [FULL  STORY]

With 100 days to go until the start of the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, Taiwan’s team held a press conference at the national training center in Kaohsiung on Thursday. Lin Ching-yi, a bronze medalist in volleyball at the 2006 Games, passed a ball to the current captain of the women’s team, Chang Chiu-yun. Meanwhile, Yang Meng-hua, a track and field silver medalist at the 2010 Games, literally and metaphorically passed the baton to short-distance runner Yang Chun-han, who will be taking the track this time around.

Outside, the archery team gave a display of their skills. Archer Lei Chien-ying said every member of their team will be aiming for their best performance in Jakarta, with individual competitors setting their sights on top-three finishes, and final positions for the team competitions.    [FULL  STORY]
