TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Tests of 78 ice cream and other ice products showed too many bacteria in 34 of them, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.

The results came up after widespread testing of a variety of products containing ice at a range of outlets including coffee shops, fast food restaurants and ice cream parlors across the nation, reports said.

The type of product registering the highest incidence of hygienic problems was shaved ice, with 64.7 percent of the popular type of ice showing poor results, the FDA said. The list also included 47.1 percent of granita beverages, 40 percent of regular ice creams, 33.3 percent of ice cubes and 27.3 percent of other types of product, according to the FDA.     [FULL  STORY]

inclusion in the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade bloc during a security dialogue in Taipei Tuesday.

It will be in the interest of not just Taiwan, but also of the region and the world as a whole, he said, while taking questions on Taiwan’s bid to join the US-led trade bloc for the Asia-Pacific region.

“I strongly support the idea — Taiwan’s inclusion in the TPP,” he said, but added that Taiwan has to be ready and prepared to accept the high standards of the trade agreement, which is still under negotiation.

From the American perspective, he said, Washington should be open and welcome Taiwan’s participation.     [FULL  STORY]

Legislator foresees 20,000-troop shortfall

Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Lin Yu-fang (林郁方) yesterday said that if the Republic of China (ROC) military shifts to an all-volunteer force, there would be a shortfall of 20,000 soldiers by the end of next year, confirming the need to continue conscription for men born before Dec. 31, 1993.

Lin said the current personnel quota is 215,000. Deducting non-established personnel — such as those still in training and students in elementary military schools — leaves the established personnel quota at 196,000.

Considering the ratio of existing personnel to “established” personnel should be 87 percent to 90 percent, Lin said the ROC military force during peacetime should number at least 170,000 to 175,000 personnel.     [FULL  STORY]

Several Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) members yesterday dismissed media reports that Deputy Legislative Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) is to be replaced by KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) as the party’s presidential candidate, saying the allegations were based on unfounded rumors.

“The KMT officially selected Hung as its presidential candidate at a party congress on July 19. The party headquarters and local branches have all begun campaigning for the candidate,” KMT spokesperson Lin Yi-hua (林奕華) said.

The media reports are based on unsubstantiated rumors, she added.

Lin was referring to an article yesterday in the Chinese-language Liberty Times (the Taipei Times’ sister paper), which cited a “credible anonymous source” as saying that two senior KMT officials had been sounding out several party heavyweights over their sentiment toward entering next year’s Jan. 16 election as Chu’s running mate.

The report said the two officials only resumed their current posts after Chu took over as chairman of the KMT from President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) in January.

“The ministry has always allowed public visits to our military bases on open house days, and during these visits, we also showcase our weaponry,” ministry spokesman Major General David Lo (羅紹和) told a news conference yesterday afternoon.

“There will be a few camp visit events later this year, and we plan to showcase the Apache helicopters to those who might be interested,” he added.

As for people who cannot make it on camp visit days, the ministry would allow visits organized by institutions and groups if they file applications for approval, he said.     [FULL  STORY]

Tsai urges verbal restraint to avoid societal strains

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) yesterday said the Presidential Office and Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) presidential candidate Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) should refrain from politicking that would create further divisions in society.

“Taiwan is a nation with multiple ethnic groups, so everyone should learn to listen and understand when encountering someone who has a different view point on an issue, this is especially for politicians,” Tsai said.

“Politicians should learn their lessons from history to make the nation and the people more harmonious. It is not a good thing to manipulate differences between different groups of people for political gains,” she said.     [FULL  STORY]

patients affected with the disease this year has reached 993 as of August 18, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (TCDC) said Sunday.

Former Tainan County mayor Su Huan-chih questioned the capability of the local government by saying it has not done enough to help reduce the outbreak as Tainan is now ranked first in the nation’s number of dengue contracts.

“It’s been two long weeks and all the debris left from Typhoon Soudelor has yet to be cleared. No wonder Tainan has become a hotbed for dengue,” he lamented on his Facebook page on Sunday.

Su also complained that twigs and branches from fallen trees are laid scattered on the streets unattended; especially the area around the Soulangh Cultural Park in the city’s Chaili District is dotted with debris over 100 meters long.     [FULL  STORY]
