Culture promised at Taiwan winter league

A baseball league begins in Taichung today in a six-team format, including two Japanese teams, with fans promised plenty of Taiwanese culture and entertainment.

The Asia Winter Baseball league is in its fourth year, with 51 games scheduled over the next two months in Taichung and Yunlin County’s Douliou City.

Two teams from Taiwan, one from South Korea and a Europe United team of players from the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Czech Republic and Romania are to play alongside Japan East and Japan West.

“Officials from Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball were very happy with the results from past years, with their players receiving good training and high-level competition. So more Japanese clubs wants to join the Asia Winter Baseball,” Chinese Professional Baseball League secretary-general Chu Kang-cheng said. “They will have two teams this year, Japan East and Japan West.”    [FULL  STORY]

Ko Pin-yi (柯秉逸) beat Jeffrey De Luna of the Philippines 11:3 in the final of the tournament, to win the title for the third time at the annual event.

Ko, who will take home a prize of US$17,780, was the men’s champion in 2011 and 2013.

Meanwhile, Chen Ho-yun (陳禾耘) came from behind to defeat Chihiro Kawahara of Japan 9:8, taking the women’s title for the first time and earning the same prize money as Ko.

The Annual All Japan Championship is recognized by the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA).    [SOURCE]

the OEC Taipei WTA Challenger singles final by succumbing to a fightback in the doubles final as a trio of Russians silenced the partisan home crowd.
In the singles final, the Taoyuan-born 25-year-old fell to a 6-4, 6-3 defeat to sixth seed Evgeniya Rodina in 1 hour, 20 minutes.

The Russian world No. 104 saved one of the three break points she faced and converted five of 13, winning 71 of the 129 points contested to claim this year’s title, while the Taiwanese world No. 154 mixed four aces with five double faults.

Rodina, a semi-finalist in Taipei last year who was cheered on by her husband and daughter, had some kind words for Chang at the post-match presentation.

“Chang played really well today, but I was lucky I came out on top in the important moments,” Rodina told the WTA Web site. “It was great to have my daughter and husband here this week — it really helped — I played second time here and I hope to come again next year.”

After a sort rest, Chang returned to the court alongside fellow Taiwanese Chuang Chia-jung in the doubles final and it looked like a title could be theirs for the taking after they won the first set 6-4 against Natela Dzalamidze and Veronika Kudermetova.    [FULL  STORY]

China intends to participate in Universiade Taipei 2017: organizer

2017, Yang Ching-tang (楊景棠), a spokesman for the 2017 Universiade, said Sunday.

A total of 105 countries had expressed the intention to participate in the sports event as of the previous day, the deadline for responses to a survey, according to the Summer Universiade Taipei 2017 Organizing Committee.

The committee opened the intent to participate survey on Aug. 19 and received positive responses from 105 countries, Yang said.

According to past experience, countries that actually participated in the event usually outnumbered countries that have responded to such surveys, Yang aid.2016/11/20

2016 in Japan on Sunday, for her third victory on the professional golf circuit this year.

Lu achieved the triumph by firing a four-under-par 68 in the fourth round of the Japan Ladies Professional Golf Association (JLPGA) tournament, carding a total 24-under 264 in the four-round game at the Elleair Golf Club in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture.

The final round of the tournament was tense for the 29 year-old, who was in first place after the third round with a four-under 196. She faced strong competition from Japan’s Mamiko Higa, who was a mere four strokes behind before the beginning of Sunday’s game.

Higa grabbed a birdie at the first hole and got an eagle at the fifth, raising the tension even further, according to media reports from Japan.    [FULL  STORY]

Chang was beaten by sixth seed Evgeniya Rodina 4-6, 3-6, in the singles, her second runner-up finish since 2012.

Chang tied with Rodina 3-3 before conceding the first set 4-6 and losing the second 3-6.

Chang then returned to the court alongside her compatriot Chuang Chia-jung (莊佳容), where they faced Natela Dzalamidze and Veronika Kudermetova in the doubles final of the tournament, which carries a total purse of US$125,000.    [FULL  STORY]

yesterday, while fellow Taiwanese Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan set up an all-Taiwanese showdown in the semi-finals of the doubles at the Taipei Arena.

World No. 154 Chang defeated world No. 145 Luksika Kumkhum of Thailand 6-1, 7-5 in 1 hour, 12 minutes in their quarter-final at the WTA 125k tournament in the capital.

Taoyuan-born Chang saved five of seven break points and converted five of seven, winning 70 of the 120 points contested, despite notching up six double faults.

The Taiwanese improved her career record over the Thai to 3-2 with her first victory over Kumkhum since a 7-6 (7/5), 5-7, 6-2 win in Taipei back in 2012.

In today’s semi-finals, Chang faces eighth seed Marina Erakovic of New Zealand, who ousted German world No. 126 Tatjana Maria 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) in 1 hour, 34 minutes.    [FULL  STORY]
