Taiwan wins LLB Junior League World Series for 4th year in a row

Taipei, Aug. 22 (CNA) Taiwan has won Little League Baseball’s Junior League World Series for the fourth consecutive year after defeating an American team from Hawaii in the championship game on Sunday in Taylor, Michigan.

The Taiwanese team, made up of players from Shing-Ming Junior High School in Taoyuan, pounced on the team from Hawaii with a two- run home run in the first and two more runs in the second on the way to a 9-1 victory.

Taiwan’s Lee Chen-hsun (李晨薰) pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing only three hits, including a solo home run, while striking out seven, to secure the victory.

Huang Chao-wei (黃兆維) hit a two-run homer to open the scoring in the first inning and left no doubt about the outcome with a two-run double in the top of the sixth that gave Taiwan an 8-1 lead.     [FULL  STORY]

Meet Taiwan 1st athlete village for 2017 Universiade

The 2017 Summer Universiade is scheduled for Taipei, Taiwan and will take place from 6772519August 19 to August 30, 2017. The host city Taipei is gearing up for the games, also known as University Olympic Games, hoping to impress athletes from around the world.

As a host city, Taipei started construction of the athlete village on August 3, 2013, under the supervision and management of Taipei City. After three years of construction, the village is slated for completion this December. Sitting on a 20-acre lot in Linkou District, New Taipei City, the athlete village for Universiade is composed of 34 24-storey buildings in two main areas. A total of 2,200 apartments in the village are projected to accommodate more than 10,000 athletes and their organizations.

The buildings are designed to withstand strong typhoons and thwart security threats with its design of a close-end village layout, a Taipei City Construction Management Office official says.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan airlines to offer special fares for 2017 Universiade teams

Taipei, Aug. 18 (CNA) China Airlines (CAL) and EVA Airways, two of Taiwan’s leading 201608180025t0001airlines, will be among the sponsors of the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei, offering discounted tickets to delegations from participating countries.

At a press conference to announce the sponsorship Thursday, Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) said special fares and luggage allowances will be available to the teams traveling on CAL and EVA Airways from other countries, and the two airlines will promote the Games in their magazines and in-flight videos.

The value of the sponsorship by the two airlines will amount to over NT$300 million (US$9.53 million), said Ko, adding that he hopes the Games will help promote Taiwan on the world stage.     [FULL  STORY]

Lu is to next take on Canadian fourth seed and Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic, the 2013 finalist who lost his opening match at home a year ago.

“If a 10,000 crowd is against you, even if you prepare for it, it is still a shock,” Lu said of his likely Raonic scenario.

Chien-Ming Wang takes pummeling in Royals loss

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwanese relief pitcher Chien-Ming Wang pitched his worst game this season on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels at Kansas City.

Wang, who entered the game in the ninth inning, threw a total of 30 balls, and was pummeled for four hits and allowed four earned runs.

He also allowed two walks and hit a batter, resulting in his ERA rising from 3.73 to 4.57 despite pitching only 0.1 innings.

Royals starting pitcher Dillon Gee pitched five innings, allowing 10 hits, and five earned runs. Relief pitcher Chris Young subsequently pitched 3.1 innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei receives NT$500 million in sponsorships for Universiade

Taipei, July 25 (CNA) The organizing committee of the 2017 Taipei 201607250028t0001Summer Universiade has received about NT$500 million (US$15.43 million) in non-cash sponsorships from corporations, according to Taipei’s Department of Sports.

Committee chief Su Li-chung (蘇麗瓊) said the city’s goal is to get corporations to contribute NT$890 million worth of products and services to the international sports event, to be held in Taipei in August 2017, and she believed the target should be easily achieved.

Such non-cash sponsorships refer to many different goods and services, the organizing committee said, including donations of sports equipment, such as badminton rackets, discounts on air tickets for foreign athletes coming to Taiwan for the event, and bottled water.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan ties for third in LPGA’s UL International Crown

Taipei, July 25 (CNA) Taiwan finished in a tie for third place along with England in the 2016 UL International Crown won by the United States in Chicago on Sunday.

A total of eight countries represented by four players each participated in the biennial women’s golf team event that started on July 21.

Taiwan’s team, consisting of Teresa Lu (盧曉晴), Candie Kung (龔怡萍), Cheng Ssu-chia (程思嘉) and Yani Tseng (曾雅妮), finished the tournament with 11 points, two behind the United States and one behind runner-up South Korea.
