the rest of his life behind bars after a top court rejected his appeal.
Kung Chung-an’s (龔重安) defense argued that he had committed the crime due to mental illness and that, given proper treatment, he could be rehabilitated.

The Supreme Court wasn’t persuaded, and said the cruel nature of the act warranted life imprisonment and the deprivation of his civil rights for life.

Around 4:30 p.m. on May 8, 2015, Kung — armed with a knife — jumped the wall surrounding his alma mater, Wenhua Elementary School in Taipei’s Beitou District.

He went into the girls’ bathroom, where he grabbed a student surnamed Liu and cut her throat.    [FULL  STORY]

deeds come back to haunt you. Novelists and director Giddens Ko has put his personal experience and social observations into his new movie, which lays this bloody reality bare.

In 2011, the rom com “You Are the Apple of My Eye (那些年,我們一起追的女孩), Ko’s directorial debut, became a breakout hit, taking the Greater China and Asia markets by storm. Now, after six years, Ko is back with “Mon Mon Mon Monsters!” (報告老師!怪怪怪怪物!), which premiered July 28. The new film has the same subject matter as “Apple” — they’re both high school dramas centering on self-styled punks — but there’s a key difference: “Monster” isn’t a comedy.

The US government fully supports the President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) administration’s New Southbound Policy, describing it as in line with the US’ own policy direction in the region, a US Department of State source said.

The source said that the US is happy to see Taiwan treating the policy as a long-term project, adding that it anticipates the two nations working together on such regional issues as the digital divide, medical training and fostering of a community mindset in the Asia-Pacific region.

The US is interested in learning more about Taiwan’s specific plans for the region, the source said, adding that it has so far been unable to obtain adequate information related to the policy.

The US has also been concerned that so many negative opinions and so much misunderstanding about the policy exist among Taiwanese, the source said.
